looking for lens advice
-
Diablo EireannachParticipant
Hi. Looking for lens advice. Previous user of slr cameras. Have an old eos 300 slr that came with 28-80 f4-5.6 usm and a 75-300 f4-5.6 usm. Ive been using a sony bridge camera for the lastfew years with full manual control. Hadnt the money to spend on a dslr.
Im now buying a canon 60d but wondering whether to pair it with the 18-135mm or get a 50mm f1.8 prime and the 18-55 is. Have approx a grand to spend. 60d + 18-135 is a shade over 1000 delivered frm onestop digital. The other combo is 948 delivered.
Thinking any xtra reach i need/want could b accomodated with the old 75-300. I like macro and wildlife photography. Some sports too. I know its not image stabilised but it never was and it didnt bother me b4. Thought the 18-55 is and 50mm prime may b of more use indoors with the wider apertures.
Any thoughts or advice. Should i look at a diff lens altogether. Or the 600d and spend savings on better lens. I know glass is king but dont want to upgrade body for a few yrs and faster fps and shutter speed would b useful.
thanks in advance
SteveDParticipantThe 50mm is quite long on a crop sensor camera, and I regret not getting a 35mm instead. I have the older Canon 17-85mm IS as my walkabout lens, and it is great.
Generally, the longer the zoom range, the more compromises have to be made. The 18-55mm is likely to be higher quality than the other option, but you would need to look at reviews. 135mm at the long end might mean less lens changes, but at what cost?
Diablo EireannachParticipantthanks steve,
have read in a few places that the 18-135 has some issues at the wide and long range alright but plenty have said its a great walk around lens too. its hard to call really
damien.murphyParticipantHard to beat the combination of a walkabout zoom, like the 18- 135 you mention, and a fast prime. For me, I have the 16-85, and a 35mm f2 with my Nikon. I find the 16-85 gives me everything from a 24mm equivalent to 135mm on the long side, a perfect range for a walkabout zoom, where you do not want to change lenses. I used to have an 18-55 previously, but found with that, I was looking for more length on occasion, and would cause me to change lenses. I do not have the same problem with the 16-85, which can stay on the camera all day.
The 35mm f2 gives me a fast 50mm-equivalent, so quite flexible, and not too long or short, to be able to use for a range of subjects. I also had a 50mm f1.4, and loved the extra stop, but it was very much my portrait lens, and not one to have in the bag for general shooting, for me.
As for quality, well you can worry about that when you get the shot, but for most purposes the zooms you mention would be fine I imagine. After all, better to have a lens mounted that will get the shot, rather than one that is too long or short.
