Upgrading From 40D to 7D or 5D M II??
-
Brian BoruParticipant
Hi,
I know the pros and cons of the 5D Mark II v the 7D and full frame versus non fullfame has been well debated but anyone any thoughts on which is best if you were upgrading from a 40D? I have two 40D bodies and plan holding onto one of these to use with my 70-200 2.8L for the extra range. Am I better having the option of both and going for a full frame? Although this will have cost factors as i would need new lenses for the fullfame as I have only EF-S lenses 17-55mm 2.8, 17-85mm and 10-22mm although of course I could always sell these and put towards perhaps a 24-70 2.8 L and Canon 50mm 1.4 as replacements.
I do some landscape photography but more street photography, family and sport. Any advice appreciated as its an important decision!
Green MeanieParticipantI have the 7D and have a real “Gear Lust” after a 5D MkII. For your 3 areas of Street, Family and Sport the 5 D will be better suited for all barr the Sport where the extra reach of the 7D with the 1.6x crop and better weather sealing will win out. Although if you keep onto one of the 40D’s you have that covered to some extent
The low light performance of the 5D is exceptional and paired with a 17-40l it will be very nearly as wide as the 10-22 was on the 40D.
It’s all about budget after all, you only need to change the body of you go for the 7D but need to chnage all your lenses for the 5D route.
All that said, it’s not what you have but what you do with it
Brian BoruParticipantThanks for your advice Green Meanie, i agree its not all about the gear, “gear lust” a good phrase tho!
SeaviewParticipantI went down the 7D route but if I had my time over again I might have waited and got the 5D M II. I think sooner or later most good photographers with an ambition to succeed will end up with a full frame camera.

I agree entirely, and this is the route I took after a KM 7D, a Canon 400D, a Canon 40D +a 50D and just recently got the 5Dmk2. Lovin the 5D so far.

JAMBOMACParticipantDon’t know much but found this site and they deliver to ireland and have shops in holland don’t think you can beat them for prices and all but one review were great. Anyway you can do your own research. Good luck in the decisions.
