Minatures/Toy Photography Action Scene – Critique Required

It was raining, I hadnt gotten to take images in a few days, and i was bored ( I dont do bored very well!) so the below images were taken as a quick expirement.

I am going to attempt them again in a more controlled way at the weekend, but I need some feedback on what could make these look better:

    1. Location.
Does the radiator in the background help or hinder the image?
what wold be a better scene to place this action sequence in? Garden? In a house/apartment? Against a block color (white) background?

I considered doing this in the garden with trees and make it look forrest like, but its clear the items are toys, so i thought it would be cool to have them in a house setting. The egg flipper/spatchala adds a bit of humour also.

    2. Depth of field.
Treebeard is very much in focus, but as i shot this at F2.8, the spider and to an extent, sauron are out of focus.
Should all carachters be crystal clear sharp or does it work as is?

Do you think the radiator should be even more out of focus (if even there at all)?

As i wanted viewers to know the scene was in a house/apartment i wanted the radiator to be visible yet out of focus, in the background. Given the limited space i had i got that effect somewhat but unsure if it should be there at all.

    3. Lighting.
This is light from the side by a speedlight on a cable. do you think that works? should it be lit from all sides to remove shadows completely?

All constructive feedback is really appreciated.

Thanks for any advice and feecback.

I personally think it is good, but shooting outside might be even better,
I dont particularly like the radiator, and maybe a slightly darker background
would work better indoors, great models and look forward to seeing the
    next episode!

I like what you’re trying to do, I remember doing something similar many years ago and using lower lighting levels and diffused lighting to create effect, and adding in a few surround props in keeping with the theme.
I would definitely create a backdrop without the rad.

I like it very much. I do think the radiator spoins it. Maybe if they were put in a coal bucket with coal? Or in a log basket? To be 100% honest I didn’t notice the spatula first off, it was only when I re-read your comments that I went back to the photo to check. Maybe if you used something really obvious like a bottle opener/cork screw?

All in all, I like the shots.

Seeing his toys from a childs level. = Good stuff. The rad didn’t bother me, but it did show what a kid sees. Like the coal bucket, maybe some other inside backdrop. Think more about where they play. Maybe in front of the fireplace. Or out in the back garden.

Using a bland backdrop might make a great idea just another still life. More about the camera than the subject/story.

    The spatula made me LOL

    1. location
get rid of the rad, use just the carpet, skirting board and wall if inside. you can try in the back garden when grass is fresh cut as the toys are small but judging by the colours of the toys, don’t think will work that well.
    2.depth of field
i like it the way it is, i don’t think that f/22 will add anything to the scene but if you really want a bit more you can go to f/4 max
    3.lighting
lighting is good, the shadows of treebeard in the first one adds value to the story

    when is the next episode?
