How do I process RAW images?

    Hi there,

What’s the best way to process RAW images? I don’t have photoshop but am currently using Picasa. Can I use Picasa for this and if so what steps are necessary?

    Hope you can help!

No idea about Picasa, but Adobe Lightroom is great for raw images. You can download a free 30 day trial from the Adobe website.

You should have also received software with your camera for processing raw. Nikon and Canon have software for doing this.

I think you can use Picasa but it is not brilliant for RAW files, you
can still only do the very basic adjustments, Lightroom is the way to
go, easy to use and you can adjust a lot more. Their noise reduction
tool is excellent, far better than photoshop.

    Hi Paul,

I’m glad to hear you take you pics in RAW – only way to go in 95% of situations.

I use Adobe Camera RAW 6.6 which is part of Photoshop CS5 – but the same version is available in Photoshop Elements 10 which is around €50

Perhaps also try Donedeal and adverts.ie for 2nd hand version of 8 or 9.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 is available as a free 30 day trail.

Older versions of Photoshop Elements come with older versions of Camera RAW which are not updateable in some cases – so if you have a newish camera – beware it may not be supported.

I use this a ‘pre-editor’ – then open up the file in Photoshop to finish it off – but a lot of images can be done fully in a RAW editor….but i have never finished it here.

Phase ONE Capture One is another very powerful RAW editor – and i’m trying out the trail version. I’m impressed.

Here is a list of FREE RAw editors.

I use the canon software that came with my camera, digital photo pro. I use it to edit the image and then convert the edited raw file to jpeg. then you can do more advanced editing in photoshop etc.

Do you have the camera software downloaded C’ ?
Do you know how to download it?
You don’t appear to have answered previous questions!
If you’re stuck I can create a short tutorial for you.

Yeah sorry, I’m a bit confused about what order in which to use the camera software. On my desktop I have Picture Style editor, Zoom Browser, Digital Photo Professional and EOS Utility. If there is a tutorial for it I would. I would be delighted if you could download it for me. I’m fairly new to digital so still trying to get to grips with all technical stuff!

    Thanks again for your help!

DPP can process your raw images.

But again, I find Adobe Lightroom great for your workflow and processing. Download it and try.

You will find loads of YouTube clips and web tutorials on how to use Lightroom.

Simply import your images, process them, and export your output.

Have tried downloading photoshop, spent ages and several attempts later was told not enough memory on laptop, at which point t felt like throwing the blooming thing out the window!

I might try Brendan’s suggestions and see if I have more success. I’m dying to try out Lightroom and the Vintage Chroma plug in!

With the canon software, I use zoom browser to view and download the raw files I want to my computer, then I open digital photo pro. To edit just open the individual pic, the right click and select tool palette. once edited, highlight the files you have edited and click batch process to convert to jpegs.
