hi, new to this site, first time posting was yesterday on the ”people” thread where i posted some baby photos. Anyway, friends of the girl I did those photos for are asking would i be interested in taking photos of their kids as they thought the photos were great and they will pay etc. But as i am only starting out and have an awful lot to learn I dont think it is fair to charge, but at the same time i would have to pay out for photo paper/printing , so what I am asking is what way did you do this when you were starting out , did you start off doing a few for free, what did you provide to them prints, cd, usb?? when did you start charging for your costs ie: paper, ink etc, and then when did you actually start to charge properly as in session fee, x amount per photo etc. Obviously the latter would be a long way down the road.
Also when you started out at what stage did you then get insurance? very new to this so a bit clueless, appreciate any info.
At the very very start I gave them for free then the more I got asked or the less I knew the person I’d charge for the costs,
Then when taken on for my first magazine work I done the first couple of months free until I got the hang of what they actually wanted from me (some like raw straight from the camera other like full on work that just needs to be printed) then once settles agreed a fee.
I’ve since dropped out for a while so starting out again pretty much as regards pricing etc.
