1st attempt at fanad lighthouse ( edited with new pic )

jodal1975Participant
decided to go up to donegal yesterday and get a couple of shots of fanad lighthouse….i doubt i’ll ever say this again ..but…the weather was too good!!…completely blue skies and not a cloud to be seen …took a couple but unless they can be converted into b+w , i think i’ll be deleting them ! …we stayed in a hotel in milford , so jumped out of the bed at 5:30 am this morn and drove back to the lighthouse. 2 things i learned this morn : 1) i need a proper wide angle lens (15mm just isn’t enough) and 2) i really need to start preparing properly …running around in a panic trying to find my vantage point and compose a shot as the sun sprints into the sky just doesn’t work!! anyway this is the 1st one processed …. would love your thoughts :-)
fanad lighthouse 1 by dallan healy, on FlickrMardai24ParticipantFrom a personal perspective, I like the foreground a lot. However, my eye is drawn to the sun in the background which looks burnt out and also to the halo above it. Maybe its a little over processing.
With regard to the foreground, I like the lighting on the rocks and the lighthouse is very crisp and clear. Even the mountains, when you move away from the sunrise, are lovely and athmospheric.
I think, if it weren’t for those two, it’d be a really cracking shot.
Just a thought, but would it be worth considering doing a square crop, and losing the sunrise altogher?
mwallParticipantDallan,
I think it’s a cracking shot…well done, the early rise deserved to be rewarded!
I was on the road at the same time yeaterday but alas, not for photography.
The only change I would suggest is to PS out the jet stream,
MikeGreen glensParticipantmarkclehaneParticipantLovely scene alright Dallan but just 1 or 2 things if you don’t mind. I think positioning the mountains a small bit higher up in the frame would help both the composition and in losing just a little of that empty sky and maybe even the jet trail. I’m also seeing some banding in the sky by the way.
Hope I haven’t come across too critical as it’s a keeper as far as I’m concerned  – just might be worth reprocessing.
Mark.jodal1975Participantthanks for the feed back all :-).. mardai i might just try cropping out that sun tomorrow and see how it turns out ! and to mardai and mark…i noticed that banding myself …its probably due to playing around with either levels or curves too much..i’ll have to go at it again (boring) when im at it ill take away a bit of the sky too….im useless with photoshop…….its gonna take ages ! :-)
SeaviewParticipantThat’s an excellent image, a great reward for getting up early. I do think the image would look more even without the sun but I’m seriously how you manage to capture the sun. I’ve given up trying to capture the sun, I normally put away the camera now when I see the sun coming over the horizon.
Dave.
markcapilitanParticipantDeeboParticipantvery good image, well done.
I think the sq crop might work and removing the sun or put into the sq crop.

thanks dave and i know what you mean…its a nightmare :x either a 2 or 3 stop filter ..or 2 exposures blended in ps later ..thats about the only way ….and even those techniques are really only possible when the sun is just up or nearly down…once its that bit higher it gets way too bright and blows out all around it.
thanks for the comments everyone im sitting here debating whether or not to have another stab at re-processing this now (im on holidays)
or leave it for another day…..decisions , decisions :?jodal1975Participantthis was taken earlier than the above shot, so there was is no sun to distract and i also made it more of a square crop … any better ? :?

and a b+w …just for luck :D
fanad lighthouse 3 by dallan healy, on FlickrRASMITH32MemberThjis is a super image and almost perfect IMO. I wouldnt remove anything from teh shot. The sunn looks great to me, the jet is an additional point of interest and adds to the shot. The composition is such that your eye wanders around the image and these (Sun and Jet) aid that.
If I was to be really picky I would say it looks ever so slightly oversharpened and as someone else already mentioned there is banding in teh sky but this could be a result of the oversharpening and JPG compression.
The first is the best by far IMO
Well done
insertnamehereParticipantReally nice set Dallan! The first is really good but there’s something special about the black and white.
Mark.

I agree. “Bring back the sun” I think the first shot is best, but needs to be re-processed to get rid of the banding. The B&W works well if the lighthouse is the subject of the shot, but if you want to show the beauty of the scenery (with the lighthouse included), then #1 is a more interesting image IMO. Well done
