I mistakingly thought this would be easy

1st try at shooting the moon last night & I mistakingly thought “No problem”, Boy, was I wrong.
I guess a bit of experimenting is called for. :)markst33ParticipantbrendancullenParticipantWell you still have another two weeks to get it right!
Things to consider ( assuming you already are using a tripod)
a – Mirror lock up – and countdown timer of 10 seconds if your camera allows it – or remote shutter cord.
b – manual focus via ‘Live View’
c – Manual exposure – with a shutter speed dependent or whether you have IS or not – but at least 1/125 i’d suggest…and a sweet mid aperture (f/5.6-f/11). A faster shutter speed would be more desirable the longer the lens – so add some more noise to achieve this. That should do it.

miki gParticipantThanks Brendan.
Tripod used, f/8, 600mm 1/60 sec, ISO 100, Manual mode, focus using live view & 10 sec countdown timer used. I was at the side of a busy road with heavy traffic passing, so I rekon that might have caused some vibration in the shots. I’ll try a higher ISO & shutter speed next time & get away from the road. Thanks.
Markst33. As mentioned, 1/60th sec shutter speed usedmwallParticipantthe other thing Miki is a remote release…but no doubt you are using one!
best of luck and hope the sky is clear,
MikeaoluainParticipantI tried this a number of years agoa nd found it extremely difficult!
dont forget the earth is moving about 1000 mph !
quick shutter is needed which means f2.8/f4 and a high ISO
well thats what I came up with!mirror lock up is a must too and even the cable from the release
rubbing off the tripod can cause minute vibrations.miki gParticipantMike: I used the cameras 10sec countdown timer to try to avoid vibrations, but even pressing the release button to activate the timer seemed to cause them. Ah well, it’s cloudy every night since, so I’ll get back to it sometime.
Aoluain: I was thinking, a wireless release might work better than a cable release. Now I wonder if there’s a way to slow down the Earth?
