Whiting Bay IR

flynnyParticipant
Took a spin to Ardmore yesterday…
This was taken with an IR converted Canon 350d
AnonymousParticipantSeaviewParticipantVery nice Paul, really suits the IR, the sky looks great. I was there earlier in the day taking a few snaps of the L.É. Eithne anchored just off shore.
Dave.
aoluainParticipantnice!
love the dark sky – hope to do some IR this weekend – all going well.
texMemberI feel the dark shadows in the foreground dominate the photo and makes it difficult to view it as a whole. The photo is also heavily weighted towards the LHS making the RHS almost redundant.
However I think your choice of location is terrific and some work on your compositional approach would work wonders. I particularly like the sleeper containment sandbank and wish you had made more of a feature of that in your photo. In general I like your photo, but I think it could be so much better.DeeboParticipantGood shot Paul, looks a great location
I kind of agree with Tex, maybe the foreground rocks are too dominant. maybe ten yards past them and using the sandbank wall as lead in might have opened up some space to walk your eyes through.
Cheers, DeebigalguitarpickerParticipantAnd here’s me thinking how well the image was exposed, with visible detail in the darkest areas!
markclehaneParticipantAhhh, many happy summers down here :D
Yeah, have to agree with Tex and Deebo as well I’m afraid. That boulder is blocking out or competing with the fence and even though it’s all perfectly exposed, it’s just too dominant in what’s otherwise a perfect scene. Should be easy to sort out with a good rope and a 4×4 the next time you return though
On a positive note, lovely lighting and clouds are perfect for IR.
Mark.flynnyParticipantThanks for the replies folks,
I can’t disagree with the comments regarding composition,
I took a good few frames at this location,
I struggled to “see” a really decent composition,
As regards the shadows in the shot,
When I think of IR mono shots,
I see hard contrast mono shots,
I’ve always thought that shadows in IR shots tend to add to the impact of these shots,
It’s one of the elements that separates IR from “normal” mono
I’ve attached a couple more images from the same location
Anyways,
Thanks again for the replies
Always appreciated
markclehaneParticipantIn my opinion the first and third ones are much better than the original shot you posted Paul. Strangely, the central horizon etc. seems to work on #3 as well.
Mark.texMemberI think like Mark that the 3rd shot is far better that your original posting. You have captured great detail throughout. I also like your second shot, maybe you have too much of a cloud formation in your first shot for it to really work.
aoluainParticipantyes those other you posted are stroker than the original.
I really like #’s 1+2
