Hi Folks,
We spent a day in Marrakech, and I’m torn between saying it’s a photographers dream or nightmare. Loads to shoot, but not always easy to do it without someone getting a bit iffy about you shooting (which quickly translates into a request for money).
None the less,,
Everyone gotta pay.
My wife and I are blogging on our few months in Morocco on our Moglander blog.

Funny how you mentioned that as I was only telling a friend of mine yesterday about my backpacking days and how I was attacked by a shopkeeper in Marrakech for snapping some Ozzie tourists I’d met in front of his store. And that was only a little Kodak pocket cam… I wonder how he’d have reacted to a dslr with a big fat wide angle
Anyway, lucky you! It’s an amazing city, especially getting lost in the Souk. I think this shot would have been much better if you had shifted to the left just a little which would have prevented the plastic from obscuring his head. I’d also like to see it in colour (spices etc.) but possibly it would lose some of the smoky atmosphere.
By the way, I’ve just had a quick look at your blog and there are some excellent images in there. Absolutely LOVE the one of grumpy chap on bike with mirror :D Excellent capture! Yeah, looking forward to seeing some more shots.
Wanderlust kicking in again now!
Mark.mervifwdcParticipantHi Mark,
Yeah, that bag is bugging me too. But if you’ve shot there, you know how quick you need to be. I just love the expression, holding the coins, and the hand out looking for money. I’m not shooting for postcards or competitions, but I really like when I can catch a slice of life, that moment, that instant when a photo tells a story.
What, you mean this old thing?
I nearly got into a row over having taken it, he was really ticked off. Ah well :-)
And yes, when the wanderlust hits, you really have to answer it!
Jonnyp16vParticipantI really like the second image, Nice timing to get the man in the mirror. I’d be tempted to convert the image to B&W. What settings did you use? Any fill in flash? I might have gone with a quicker shutter speed to freeze the action more.
mervifwdcParticipantHi,
Fill flash – i dont think so! Street photography in Marrakesh is tricky enough without dragging attention to yourself. Sure, if you ask and and they agree and you get that kind of shot (which I’m totally fine with, and do regularly) but the the sneaky grab shot that you just couldn’t set up – It’s got to be done quietly. To my way of thinking anyway.
The settings were iso 800, F2.8 35mm on a full frame body (yes, I’m pretty close to this guy), 1/25 of a second, which is why I’m panning with him.

Well done!ss
