age old question

derek897Participant
i used to have a nikon D300, circumstances forced sale of said camera, sadly. :) now circumstances have changed and am in the market to buy some gear to replace what iv had to sell. the question now is what to go for, i have no existing equipment so im not stuck with any particular system. am kind of leaning towards a canon 7D at the min. i have a budget of around €1500 give or take a couple of hundred. any thoughts ???
AllinthemindParticipantIt would depend on the type of photography you do. try the DXOMark site, this compares sensors and lenses and breaks down the analysis into faster/low-light cameras and highe resolution cameras. It also looks at colour depth, dynamic range etc.
The Nikon D7000 is one of the better crop sensor cameras around at the minute.

derek897Participantshould have clarified that with my budget i will be getting used equipment in order to get the type of spec that i want. :)

Maybe not an idea that will please you, but think seriously about micro 4/3. I had a D300 since it was introduced and got tired of carrying the weight. I sold everything and started purchasing used m4/3’s gear. I started off by renting and making several hundred side-by-side images with the D300 and a Panasonic G3. And yes I could see a difference at 200-400%. But no difference displayed on our wide screen TVs or competition sized A4’s. Therefore I decided that m4/3 is “good enough”. In the years I owned the Nikon I only printed larger than A4 a handful of times. And interestingly, none of them were shot with the D300. They were all shot with Canon p&s.
The selection of lens isn’t as broad as Canon or Nikon. But then I don’t need much of the speciality glass. I can easily replace my 35 and 50mm primes, 16-85mm walk about, 70-300mm telezoom, and 10-24mm wide angle. Now my bag with 14-45mm walk about lens weighs less than my old holster bag alone. BTW – m4/3 is 2X crop, so 14-45 = 28-90mm full frame. The video folks seem to be over the moon about the zoom by wire lens, but i can’t speak to video.
Actually I did keep just one piece of gear from the Nikon kit. Even though it seems large, the cost to down size a paid for Gitzo 2530 w/RRS BH-40 would have only reduced weight by .4 lbs. It is soild as a rock and even more so with just 400 grams of m4/3 gear on top. I’m currently experimenting with the tiny Hama tripod I have for my Canon S95. Since it’s only 40cm high, it seems to be stable enough. The Largest GorillaPod with their small ballhead and arca-swiss plates looks like another tripod I’ll borrow and try. But the Gitzo isn’t going anywhere.
Anyway, think about smaller lighter kit. There have been several new m4/3’s introduced lately and they are just beginning shipping. You can get great pricing on used one year old gear. So far I’ve spent €700 on G3, 14-45mm and 20mm f/1.7 pancake.
If you looking for the very, very, best IQ, then disregard this idea. But if nearly the best can make you happy, then think about the smaller body and lenses.
derek897Participanthi pelagic, thanks for the info, i find that im printing a lot of 50×60 cm prints. dont know if it could go to that size or larger without iq loss. i do a fair bit of sports, macro and portraits so i need a fairly good allrounder, anyone any thoughts or experience with the canon 7D ? or nikon D700 ?
pelagicMemberBillyCParticipantWould second the D7000. Really is a joy to use with fantastic low light performance for a cropped sensor camera. The video isn’t quite as good as the 7D I’m led to believe from talking to mates who have used both but all in all am really happy with mine. Can pick up a lightly used body relatively cheaply too leaving some cash for glass.
miki gParticipantThe D7000 seems to have slightly better specs & IQ than the 7D.
