Lense for pub/nightclub photos

Hi,
Am going to be taking some event shots for a friend in pubs and clubs and want to get some info on a suitable lense to use.
I am thinking something like a wide angle would be suitable with wide aperture, f2.8, but hoping somebody who has experience doing this could give me a heads up.
I have canon with cropped sensor so would need to be suitable for this.
thanks,
Kevinjodal1975Participanti think the 16-35 L is prob your best bet it goes to 2.8 ….but is expensive. there is also the 17-40 L but thats only f4… i dont think either of them have i.s , so i hope your camera has good high iso quality. another option is the 24-70 L 2.8 but it may not be wide enough with the crop sensor

Thanks for this, had a look online and the 16-35 is quite expensive. would there be another brand with a suitable range for a f2.8?
CageyParticipantHow about the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8? I use it on my Nikon. It’s a great cheap alternative to the first party offerings. I’ve compared gig shots taken using mine to shots taken with the Nikon 17-55 2.8, and you couldn’t tell the difference tbh. It’s 1/3rd the price, and to me, the main difference is build quality.
damien.murphyParticipantI’d consider if f2.8 will be fast enough for you, if you haven’t already solved your shooting dilemma. Typically an average lit room in a house/ apartment at night will require around 1/30 f2.8 iso 1600, and a club or nightclub will be darker than that. I would check out the venue beforehand with the lighting you will be shooting in, which will let you know if simply bumping the iso with lens f2.8 will work for you. Obviously bumping the iso would be predicated on having a camera where you feel comfortable with the quality you get at higher iso’s.
JMac-2006Participanti’ve done some of that type work before, in some situations you can use flash (dialled right down), but generally if you want to get the club feel with lighting etc you want to avoid flash and for that you’ll need something that will go wide open 2.8 or even better 1.8 – i often used a 16-35 2.8 and a prime 50mm 1.8 (the nifty fifty you can pick up for < 100e – the lack of zoom though is limiting in crowded places) you'll find ISO will need to be up at 800/1600 if your camera can cope. If you have a newer model you can probably go a lot higher with ISO meaning 2.8 will be well capable. once you can get the shutter up to above 1/30 or ideally faster you'll be fine.
hope works out for you
