General purpose FD zoom

Folks, I am currently putting together a Canon FD system, I know what I want in the prime department but need a bit of advice on zooms. I am intent on buying an FDn 70-200mm F/4 but I am puzzled as to what to buy as a general purpose all rounder. Most of my work with this system will utilise the primes however I would like a good general purpose zoom for travel. Any recommendations appreciated.

the ef-s 15-85is is a very good all round lens. although slow f4/f5.6 its optical quality has been compared to the 17-50 , which is an L lens in all but name ! it gives a very reasonable wide angle and would partner the 70-200 perfectly

LOL, good one Jodal1975 :) Worth reading the question…FD  .
I understand what you want, jmccoy. Mid-range zooms are usually not that exciting, but both the Canon FD 35-70 and the 28-85 are pretty ok lenses, so is the 35-105. The 20-35mm is great of course, but too expensive s/h. If you want something light (although you’d want a faster 50 anyway, I’d go with the old 28-55. Nice and cheap. All the best.

PS I have to admit that I’m with Nikon now though. My 17-35mm AF-S works fine on my 1971 F2 and my FE2 :)) That and the 85mm Samyang f1.4 are the two lenses that cover 90% of my SLR lens needs, digital and 35mm.
Your AE-1 is a nice camera though.

Thankfully I have the fast 50 taken care of via a new FD f/1.4. That lens was immaculate when delivered, it actually looked new. Going on your advice and bit more research and pricing I think I may go with the FDn 35-105 f/3.5 Macro, given the option of using this for macro work and the useful zoom range I think this could be a good fit for me.

    Cheers lads
