Blut00Participant
This was an easy set-up, Pyrex lid filled with water, black towel underneath. Wireless flash directly on the right of the lid firing across the scene with an A4 sheet of paper on the left to bounce the light back to source.
I like the liquid metal effect from the flash, minimal PP, some sharpening, exposure tweaks and crop.
A little disappointed with the detail of the towel picked-up by the flash………….looks like noise, I might try this again with a smoother non reflective background.Suggestions welcome.
IsabellaParticipantblack paper maybe?
i like the idea of using a pyrex dish with water! i did a whole load of experiments with different liquids in a white bowl a few years back, even tried dripping ruby grapefruit juice into milk, forgetting of course that the milk would curdle (along with my stomach at the sight of it!). also didn’t have a decent flash so i lit the scene with a bunch of bedside lamps. in the end i wasn’t mad on any of them, I really like the way the water looks almost like liquid metal in yours!Blut00ParticipantBlack Paper…..all colours of paper could produce interesting results…………..even tin foil might be worth a try, I fell Splash 3 is coming sooner rather than later.
Isabella, I’d like to see some of the ‘milk & bedside lamps’ results.
Mick-skylineParticipantlove these shots but i can never get them to come out right, what sort of setting are you using to get the actual splash?? if you dont mind me asking??
Blut00ParticipantMick, I used a ‘Nurofen’, dosing syringe……………basically the thingy that comes with children’s Nurofen to give measured doses of the liquid.
I was holding it about 60cm above the dish and fired the IR release just as a drop left the syringe.
I’ve since been told that a bag of water suspended over the dish with a small hole allowing a constant drip will free my hands up a bit more…….and I intend trying that the next time.Guess there’s nothing left to say but try it!! :)
Mick-skylineParticipantill be trying it as soon as i have a min now, cheers, what shutter etc you using there??
Blut00ParticipantExposure 0.02 sec (1/50)

Exposure Bias 0 EV

Exposure Program Manual
Metering Mode Spot
Exposure Mode Manual
White Balance ManualmarkclehaneParticipantI could be wrong here but I wonder if using evaluative/matrix metering would have given you a better result than Spot?
Also, if you’ve shot in RAW, you could try increasing the “Blacks” slider a bit, along with a few other tweaks like exposure – it might just camouflage the texture of the towel. It’s a nice effect that’s almost there, but…
Mark.Blut00ParticipantThanks Mark, I just cut and paste some of the EXIF in the earlier post, not sure if the metering mode is relevant as I was shooting fully manual…………again not too sure.
I did shoot it RAW………..very new to me, ran it through Lightroom……….very new to me also.
I’m going to try your suggestions and see can I get an improvement, Thanks for your suggestions.
I’ll post the re-processed resultmarkclehaneParticipantMy apologies. I didn’t fully read through the exif and being used to always shooting in Aperture Priority myself, I just presumed
