Along El Camino Real (The Royal Road) in California are 21 missions built by catholic missionaries between the 1760s and the early 1800s. The 5th mission to be built was this one in San Luis Obispo. The original mission was a log chapel and was built in 1772. It was named after Saint Louis, Bishop of Toulouse, France.

Over the years it went through various changes in style but in the 1930s it was restored to the Spanish style we see today.

The mission is located in downtown San Luis Obispo, a nice town located just off highway 101 about 4 hours drive south of San Francisco.

A statue of Father Junípero Serra stands outside the church. Father Junípero Serra founded the mission in 1772.

The mission as seen from Mission Plaza.

The original bells are now hanging in the mission garden. The current church bells were introduced in 2005.

    Hi Dave,

A lovely selection of images with nice colour.
I like your captions too as I think such commentary adds to the enjoyment of viewing the photographs.

I feel it would be easier to comment on the individual images if they were numbered.

Very nice and thanks for sharing.

    John.
