just wondering what lens would be good for portraits and landscape? i was thinking 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 USM IS

if you have money to spend i would recommend 17-55 f/2.8 or 18-55 and prime lens like 50 f/1.8 or 85 f/1.8 , primes are ideal for portraits

i have the 15-85 ..its a great lens . nice and wide and reasonably long . so great for landscape and portraits. as many reviews suggest , it is sharp , pretty much on the same level as the above mentioned 17-55. the only draw back is that it is slow 3.5 to 5.6 ,so not particularly good in low light (saying that with newer cameras you can really crank up the iso ) or for for really shallow depth of field . it is however nearly e300 cheaper than the 17-55 , so you could get the 15-85mm and a nifty fifty (50mm 1.8 prime ) as the latter only costs e100, have the best of both worlds and still save e200 ..its what i did ! :-)
see a review of 55-85 below:

thanks for the comments i think ive decided what i wanna go for you can say if u think it a good idea or not for landscape 10-20MM 4-5.6 and prime 60mm 2.8 for portraits and these would mount to canon eos 60d

10-20 is very good choice for landscapes , but 60mm f/2.8 its sounds more like macro lens ,but like i said for portraits i would recomend 50mm 1.8 or 1.4 depend on your budget or 85 1.8

Assuming you have a crop sensor I would go for:

    Landscape:Tokina AT-X 11-16mm 2.8 AF Pro DX (€670)

    Portrait: Canon 50mm F/1.8 (€100)

If you are going on the cheap I would start off with the 50mm and save for the WA.

Ideally you want lenses with quite different properties in portraits and landscape. I really couldn’t give you wholehearted advice to get one lens or another, as whatever single lens I’d recommend would be a compromise. Portrait usu. wants fast and longish, – used wide open for nice OOF areas, landscape either wide or wide-zoom, with less importance on max. aperture.
