    Hi All,

I’m not much of a nature photographer and have almost never photographed birds. Today the gulls near our house were making a huge fuss and racket about their baby which flew for the first time today, the adult birds were circling all over the place and squawking like crazy. I also got a new 80-200 f/2.8 so I thought it would be a great opportunity to give it a test. Here is one of the shots(taken from my bedroom window). Slightly post processed. Some critique and comments (especially from experienced bird photogs) would be very welcome. Although the sun was behind me the overcast sky was very reflective and gave the bird a glow – see translucent feathers, the vignetting was naturally occurring. Uncropped.

    Thanks,

I like it Carl, the sky has done you no favours but there is nothing you can
do about that, not bad detail at all and nicely framed. Keep it up………birding
is probably one of the most rewarding/frustrating genres to do. Plenty of
patience and lots of disappointments but when you do get a keeper it makes it
    all worthwhile. :)

Thanks for taking the time to comment Jenny. You’re right the sky was pretty brutal yesterday. So, I just dropped in a blue sky. and made some minor adjustments, contrast, reduced the black in the blue and cyan and layers and applied some lens blur – hope it’s not too obviously fake…

also, cropped it at the top a bit to remove some of the dead space at the top of the frame…

No not fake at all, you did a great job, …..now can you do anything like that in
Wicklow I could really do with some blue sky and fluffy white clouds

We’ve all been cursed with that “one shade of grey” sky, time and time again. It’s such a pain especially when the birds are doing their part.

Great job Carl! I’m not a fan of changing backgrounds (because I can’t do it convincingly!) but this really works well.
