I don’t take a lot of portrait shots so would love to know how these could be improved. I know the smoking shot will not be to a lot of peoples taste but I just loved the look.

Anyway #1 I like the processing and the contrast and sharpness are spot on, however i am not a fan of angled portraits, where the camera was tilted as opposed to the position of the models head. Also the pieces of hair beneath the chin are distracting so i would clone them out.
#2 I like the composition, I am undecided about the colour cast you have used. Thats only a personal thing. Its a pity you have not captured smoke from the cigarette which would have filled in the unused top RHC and added a little more atmosphere to the shot.
Just my opinion :)

AnonymousParticipantI think that’s an issue with all photography sites Mark.
I’ve stopped posting on my own club site due to these reasons.
You go to a lot of bother to take, process & post an image & then
you have 100+ views with 2 comments!Someone once said, here I think that if they don’t like the image they won’t comment.
I would agree with that comment in part but what if they do like it?Personally I don’t like the above images.
There’s nothing of substance in them. Nothing to give a hint of the personality behind the subject.IsabellaParticipanti like the unusual angles myself but would agree about the hair in 1. looks a bit off. not mad on the color in 2 and i think overall that on their own with no particular story or narrative around them they don’t really do very much.
markclehaneParticipantAppreciate the comments. So I guess I won’t be making a career out of Portraiture any time soon
Mark.markst33ParticipantDon’t worry too much Mark. Its always good to experiment. And remember the most important thing about photography is that YOU like the results. After that it does not matter what anyone else thinks.

beans1981ParticipantHi Markst33,
I quite like No.1, super sharpness in the eyes which draws you in and quite like the angle.
No.2 for me not so much and maybe it’s because of the casting or the cigarette not sure.
Anyway, my opinion.

markclehaneParticipantYeah, I’ve grown to really dislike #2 myself (dodgy toning aside) so it’s definitely heading for that little dustbin in the corner of my monitor :D
Thanks again for comments.JMac-2006ParticipantHi Mark, what lighting lens choice did you have, is it a bare speedlight? As the lighting seems a bit harsh particularly on the skin of cheek in first image. #1 has more potential with softer lighting, #2 i’m not sure the pose and tone and the cigarette (though as prop has been in many beautiful images so i usually have no issue)
No expert by the way.
