Question, Wedding Videographers using Photographers images

So I shot my first wedding about 2 weeks ago and I just have a question regarding wedding videographers using photographers images for their DVD cover.

So the videographer asked me to send them a few images from the wedding for their dvd cover (no mention of compensation for the images just a casual ‘this is what we do’), at the time I was thinking “ya sure this is probably standard practice” and I told them I’ll be in contact with them about what images they want to use. After the wedding I thought about it a bit more, their product is upped by my work. I understand it will probably say on the back of the dvd that the images are by me but is that really substancial enough for the use of your images (because it’s not in other professional photography).

Do photographers charge or is this something that vendors do for each other. As I said I’m new to the wedding industry so I’m unsure if handing over the images is what people usually do or is this a case of them taking advantage of a first timer. Starting out like I am I don’t mind giving over the images as I’m building not sustaing a business, but I’d like to know the thoughts & actions of others in this profession.

I have been a photographer for almost 30 years and have never been asked to supply a photograph for the video cover. I am often asked by Videographers if it’s Ok if they take a photo of the B&G themselves for their cover and I never have a problem with that.

Sometimes I am told by brides that nobody but nobody is to see her photographs other than herself and as I am contracted to her on the day then I have to respect her wishes. I would also be aware that after all is over and done, she may have a dispute with the video operator and would not appreciate seeing my photograph on his cover. She would also have grounds for being upset by me giving her photographs to others without her permission. From once you give her photograph to someone else you no longer have control of it or of who sees it or, even, publishes it.

As you say yourself, it’s your work also and you need to be paid for your efforts also. Most of all we have to remember who is paying us for the day and who has contracted us for the job.

I think it would be the best thing to forget about the video operator and let him find his own photographs. That way, you will avoid any unforeseen issues that may occur (but probably never will ……….. but its just being safe)

That’s my very humble opinion on the matter and probably not everyone will agree.

I’d agree with Gerry. The bride & groom are the ones paying for your work & the work of the videographer. I would contact them (B&G) and ask what their thoughts on it were first. If they are happy with the idea, then you can contact the videographer & come to some kind of agreement (contract). You can dictate the terms for it’s usage & any costs, accreditation etc. The use of a discrete watermark on the image could work in your favour, but again, this is something that would need to be agreed on by those involved too.

I should mention that, I don’t shoot weddings & that this is only my opinion. :D

I think it’s a little extreme & petty to be honest.
You’ve been paid for the day & it’s an image for a DVD case cover!
It’s for the bride & groom, no one else.

I’d agree with John17, I’ve been asked a few times and I’m always happy to supply an image for the dvd cover, inevitably I’ll supply one that I’m using on a cover myself so it will be obvious that I’ve supplied both. But surely we should be all out to help each other a little?
