The ‘Black Castle’, Wicklow Town, Ireland ~ 6:25am ~ Wed 22 Aug 2012.

The small beach below left of these Norman remains is called “Travelahawk” – and is where St. Patrick first landed into Ireland.

    Canon 5DMKII & 17-40mm – Lee 0.9 Grad filter (soft)

    Hi Brendan,

I think this is a good image.

Lovely colour and nice and crisp.

I thought the land jutting into the sea looked a little dark but in the larger version it’s lit quite well.

    Well done.

    John.

    Lovely shot Brendan.

Not content with influencing me to add a Metz 58 to my wishlist, I now need Lee filters……..fast.

Lovely image Brendan. Colours, comp and exposure are great. However I do find the scene a bit empty.

I really like it. I think the emptiness really adds to it to be honest – love the clouds!

What’s a Lee filter by the way?

    Thks for your comments.

I did this shot from this angle as a request. I was on a 60 degree cliff looking northwards. I set up about 10 min before sunrise – and waited.
Its the only composition i could do using the “rule of thirds” formula. A tall ship on the right would have been nice though!
There are far nicer castles in Ireland i know – but this is my ‘local’ one….well the stump of it.

paulocon – “Lee” make an enormous range of filters – and they are the best….by far.
    I used Cokin filters previously with a sigma 10-20- but when i got a 5DMkii & 17-40mm – I changed to the Pro choice.

You need filter holder, a lens adapter to hold the filter to the Lens (in mm) and then you can start building your filter collection.

They are pretty expensive – but give perfect results. ( approx €80 for filter and adapter – and approx €80 per filter afterwards)
I still make use of bracketing (-1,0 &+1 exposures) – even with the filters on as i think it makes gradients in post production easier to control – and come out much smoother.

    I have 5 in total
    A 1,2, & 3 stop Graduated Neutral Density (Hard edge) (0.3, 0.6 & 0.9 in Lee terminology)
A 3 stop Graduated Neutral Density (soft edge) (0.9)
    A 2 stop ND. (0.6)
    A 10 stop (Big Stopper)

The one i use most and would recommend as first purchase is the 0.9 soft edge….followed by a 2 stop ND (milky water effect etc)
