I did a Google Image search on one of my photos which is hosted on flickr, and I was surprised to find that a book publisher in Italy had used it on a book cover!
The license clearly does not allow this use, and they never contacted me to request permission- the book was originally published in 2009 and is still on Amazon.
I’ve emailed them and faxed them, but they have not responded.
I think I might send them an invoice- any advice on how I work out a suitable amount? I’m not sure I would have licensed it for this book cover, but I suppose it would be reasonable to come to some terms with them now the book is published.
I get the feeling they will just try to ignore me- does anyone know what my options are for pursuing this, given that they are based in Italy?
I don’t have any advise to give you but if at all possible could you show the image/book cover?
Can someone explain the benefits of using Flickr? In my view, from reading comments on other sites
it’s an assumed free open warehouse for the unauthorised use of others images.
I’m not sure I would agree. Flickr seem to be very clear about licensing- the license for each photo is clearly stated on every page and they have tools for searching by license-type and they also have agreements with stock photography sites, if you’re into that. Not sure what more they can do. They do have a lot of photos on there- so I’m not sure if the problem of unauthorised use is proportionately worse for them.
I’ll certainly post some links after the thing is resolved.
