Canon lens – extender or not?
-
kerryanne67Participant
Hi – I have a Canon 100-400mm EF F4.5-5.6l IS USM lens and I would like to know if I can get a x1.4 or x2 extender for it? I thought I read somewhere that my particular lens does not suit extenders as it is too slow – is that the case?? (I’ve found a lens hire company who say they can offer extenders for hire and my lens is one of the “compatible” lens’s for the Canon extenders – allegedly!) If I can use an extender on it can I still use the auto-focus and is there anything in particular I’d need to watch for or settings I’d need to stick to? (or would x1.4 be better than x2 or vice versa?) Sorry but I’m an amateur planning to head off to take photos of wildlife in January and I’m trying to work out if an extender would have any benefit to me or not as I want to utilise my holiday as best I can. Thanks alot. :) (PS: I will be using the lens on a Canon 7D).
aoluainParticipantwell your lens is too slow IMO.
f4.5-5.6 with a 2X extender would be f9-11
you are extending by 2X and also extending 2 stops!
what camera are you using? if its a crop camera like a 50D your 100-400 would essentially be
160-640 f4.5-5.6miki gParticipantI’ve used a x2 extender on a 300mm f/2.8 with great results & I’ve used a x1.4 extender with a 70-200mm f/2.8 but only got ok(ish) results. I’m not sure if your lens is compatible to use with extenders, but if it is, I’d imagine that it will be too slow for anything other than static sujects & extenders tend to degrade image quality. I’d suggest investing in a hide & just get closer to your subject (except with lions, bears etc). You will most likely lose autofocus using extenders too.
kerryanne67ParticipantThanks all for taking the time to reply, I’m using a 7D. Ok so I think I have to accept then that my 100-400mm is too slow for an extender, ahh bit of a shame but there you go, I doubt I’ll be buying a faster one than that for a while :-( – Thanks Miki, Aoluain & Twinflash for giving me your opinion though – much appreciated. Kerry
cameramanParticipantyou can use a 1.4 extender with this lens it you are using a canon 1d iii camera but the auto focus is very slow
