IR conversion recommendations?

Hiya, I’m thinking about converting a (not yet purchased) Canon body to IR – can anyone recommend somewhere to get this done? I’ve found a place in the US (would cost $250 plus p&p and insurance), but would prefer somewhere closer to home if at all possible. Many thanks if you can help!

Think there may be at least one place in the UK, but can’t remember the name, only that they never posted prices of their website, so perhaps it might be prohibitively expensive. If not set on a dslr, there are people and places that offer ir-converted compacts, if you are more looking to dip your toe into the water, although once again do not have any names, as its been a long time since I looked into it. I do remember ir-converted compacts were pretty reasonable, and back then you could pick one up for €200- €300 maybe 3/ 4 years ago.

Good luck, and keep us updated! :)

Before you spend money on getting your camera converted you could try using the Hoya R72 IR filter. I got one at xmas and I have to give it a go (unfortunatley the weather has been very dull and grey lately).

The results can look pretty spectacular after a bit of tweaking in PS.

the trouble with filters on digital is that the shutter speeds are ridiculously slow. a conversion allows normal usage. (as does film incidentally)

Hi Darkginger, I Had my old Nikon D80 converted to IR (830nm) this time last year with ACS in the UK (http://www.advancedcameraservices.co.uk/html/ir.html” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false; ) . Great service had it back in 3 weeks, think they charged about €280 ??.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. In the end I’ve gone for the Hoya filter to start with – have only managed a couple of test shots so far as I need to read about how to get the most out of it. I agree that the shutter times are long, but with a tripod and remote, that’s OK. What’s not so OK is the inability to see through the viewfinder with the filter on, and therefore have to guess about focus, more or less. Early days yet – will post some results when I achieve something!

You have to compose and focus. Then put the filter on and switch to man focus before pressing the shutter otherwise it tries to focus again. I am just back after taking some shots. 10 secs at f13 so not bad

I like that result you’ve got there – still not had a chance to try again with the filter (went out with it the other day, but was too hungover to work it all out, so settled for some ‘normal’ shots instead!). Hopefully in the next few days whilst we can still see the sun!
