How much to charge?

Just been asked to submit a quote to a newspaper for Aitricity League photo/written coverage of the Premier team that are in the papers’ circulation area; home games only to begin with. Not sure how much to ask per game, bearing in mind the following; I do have an FAI Media Pass so admission price will not come into it, and it will cost me twenty euros in fuel per game to travel there. They would be looking for a half tabloid page per game, mostly pics with a short match report.

    Any thoughts?

Media don’t pay any admission fee.

If your costs are €20 for transport, then you need to consider –
    your time
    depreciation on your gear
    insurance costs
    food
And … most importantly …. how much you value your services.

For photos, standard media rates are €60-80 per image used. For written coverage, I am not sure the going rate, but I would assume that it would be fairly similar.

Can you ask them what their editorial rates are? Where are they getting pics at the moment from? Are they aware that you are going to be charging them?

Normally regional papers pay between €10 and €25 per pic published and local papers pay even less and pay nothing towards expenses so before you send in a quote to them that’s completely unreasonable I’d ask what their editorial rates are and go from there.

I’ve sent off the quote and will await the outcome. Just for now, I’ll hold back on revealing how much I put down but it wasn’t crazy high and it wasn’t pittance penny low. I spoke to a few friends who work in different media areas over the weekend and it seems some of the regionals are trying to cut down on agency “per image fees” by paying someone to cover the game instead. There is even one newspaper title, not the one I’m concerned with, not too far from me, who are hiring people on JobBridge for an extra fifty euros per week and sending them off here there and everywhere with an SLR. My own views on JobBridge and the like are for another forum!

It’s unlikely that you will get anywhere near €60-80 per image for a local paper . Heres how it worked for me at biggish paper wont mention them. You were told how many images they wanted from each game, usually this does not include team photo unless it’s a big game . The pay is on a downward scale, lets say they wanted 5 shots the first would be €20 second would be €10 and the other 3 would be €5 an image so you get a grand total of €45 per match. I also did other work for the papers ( not sport) on the same arrangment. If you are shooting local sport make sure that they will give you the after sales and not keep them for themselves as you do get some from junior sport events. Two years after I finished with one paper i did work for they still have my images in their for sale gallery section

Thats how some papers work if they are sending you to cover the game for them, you might have a few games per week to cover so it adds up. You also get mileage per journey, but you need to agree before hand if it’s milage from the game your at if you have 2 games to cover, or from the office. Which can be a huge difference if you are going from one side of the county to the other to cover a game. Then you send time sitting and editing and a dding captions which is standard and expected all for €45 or alittle more

Then you wait for a few weeks to get paid at the start you might not get paid for 2 months as some work on back months.

ps I don’t do this anymore I found it was not worth it over time

Have to agree with Damien above…I cover soccer for a local paper here in Waterford and he is spot on with everything he says about the rates local papers pay…if your quote was too high they just won’t hire you but if you are happy with taking a lower rate but something along the lines Damien is talking about I would still consider it because the exposure you will get over the years from these matches will be worth more than the money you will receive…I have been doing it for 4 years now and the rates just got lower and lower but the amount of work I have picked up from people that see me at games and also the purchase of photos fars outweighs the negatives. I use the soccer games as an advertising tool and always have business cards with me…you are never going to get rich covering games like that but once you agree a fee that you are someway happy with I would go for it….also there is no need to stay for the full game…get your shots and get home out of it.
