Experimenting with Rim Lighting

I am trying to learn a little bit about Rim Lighting and a friend very kindly lent me a flash to experiment with. These were shot on the kitchen table using one flash. Unfortunately (from a photographic point of view) our kitchen and dining area has lots of natural light coming in from all different angles and so there is a certain amount of contamination which is very difficult to eliminate unless I paint all the windows black.
Anyway these are just a first effort.
If anyone has any tips or suggestions I would be delighted to hear them
