Night Time photography is probably not the best way to introduce yourself to the world of photography.
To get the ball rolling – I’d recommend buying two magazines a month. “Practical Photography” and “Digital SLR Photography” Over a period of a year both of these magazines will cover everything you need to know from light, to composition to gear. Do all the projects and tasks. There are many magazines but i can assure you these are the best two.
On these 5 images in particular – all are out of focus and are poor compositions. No. 2 is at least properly exposed.
Don’t try it when there are clouds – it just doesn’t work.If your really interested in Astral Photography – bookmark this site. It covers everything.

MurchuParticipantHi Stein,
I haven’t seen a lot of astral photography I like (I think its a tough subject to do well), so will stick to the technical side.
As Brendan says, the images are soft, which may be due to what you used to stabilise the camera. It could equally be your focus too, but if thats the case, simply put your camera into manual focus if you can, and set the focus for infinity, that way you won’t have to deal with your autofocus trying to focus on something closer to the camera.
You’ve covered the hardest part, ie getting out there and doing it. This is often the part we all have biggest difficulty with, when it comes to landscape and night photography, so from here on in, keep it up, and just refine your technique.
Work on your composition, make sure you have good camera support (tripod, etc), and other things like enough batteries, etc.
Welcome to PI by the way :)
johnd1980Participantalso bring a torch with you and gently light up something of interest in the photo (ie. the tree) and see what you think of the results you get from that.
JMac-2006ParticipantWelcome
Firstly, fair play for getting out there with the camera and trying something.
For this type of photography you need a good tripod, a shutter release or the timer on the camera and use manual focus to infinity (or just slightly short of it). also cover the eye piece of your camera i’ve heard. Cameras with good iso at 1600/3200, and a fast wide lens are a plus if you have but if not don’t let that hold you back.
A clear night if possible :) away from any town or city to avoid the orange glow from streetlights also helps.
There are lots tutorials and inspiration online and plenty willing to share their knowledge. Keep practising.
