What program is best for organising photos. Not cloud. Has anyone used http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;
One book said to have RAW and Jpegs of each photo. What would be best to organise this. i am a beginner. ThanksConDohParticipantI’d like to hear others workflow for this too, personally I have a not so great system of backing them up manually (after cull) to my computer in organised folders of Personal & Business, each breaks down into categories. It’s just the way I started but I’ve been meaning to change it for a long time, I know a lot of people who use Lightroom Catalogue, this will probably be my choice.
As for storing, I’ve always just stored RAW and edited files as Jpeg or Tiff. My computer is pretty powerful so it has no problem flicking through Raw files but if it wasn’t I’d probably store low res jpeg previews too. (I’m fairly sure that’s what lightroom does, store a low-res preview image)paulParticipantAsk 10 photographers and you will get 10 different answers.
I store my images on my PC (raw). I have a specific drive in my PC for them, Directories are broken down
YYYYMMeventOnce they are in that structure, I import images in to Adobe Lightroom, and further keyword, tag and caption them. Lightroom holds my catalogue of images.
I also then backup the images to a NAS and also to individual external disks. You can never have too many backups.
That works for me.
NanuParticipantMust say I’ve always found Lightroom works for me. The ability to import, export organise and copy files in most formats add key wording, meta data and the fact you can manipulate non-destructively makes it a winner.
markst33ParticipantThis was a subject I took a great interest in last year after an external HD I had my images backed up to (4000+ images) choose the exact moment to die just as i was installing a new o/s on my machine. Was in mourning for weeks.
After a talk in the club about the merits of LR, I started to use it and my workflow is now as follows.
1. Shoot in RAW
2. Created a directory structure in LR as follows BackupsMark_DVD_01, ….02, ….03, etc
3. Import via LR and assign custom names based on month/date to images
4. Assign Keywords, Meta data
5. Fill each Mark_DVD_xx folder up to 4 gigs of images
6. Burn to DVD for storage with Mark_DVD_xx written on each DVD and store in a secure place
7. I have an external HD hooked up to iMac with Time machine running to do backups regularlyThis means that I have images in 3 locations. I know some guys in the club who are backing up to 5 locations but who knows whats the right decision.
Mark.
ossie13ParticipantI use Lightroom and my workflow is very similar to Mark but I backup to 2 External HDs and burn to DVD!
Learn my lesson some years ago when my computer crashed and I had no backup
Cheers Steve
