How important is a title to a print or photo?

As the title suggests, I would like to hear peoples thoughts on the importance of giving your photo or print a title or name.
How important is it? either on a website or in a competition….?I would love to know your thoughts on this one.

I recall viewing a display of photo journalism shots a while back & for many of them, my initial thoughts were that they were just snap shots that anyone could have taken. It wasn’t until I looked at the titles before some of them had any meaning for me & if you didn’t relate to the story behind the shot, they just meant nothing. The titles didn’t alter the shots themselves, but they changed how the viewer looked at them. Sometimes, the photographer may have an idea, based on the title, before he or she takes the shot, but titles are usually included after the photo is processed & is normally used to give meaning to a photograph.Personally, I like to give my images titles. I normally feel that a photo is not complete without one, but there are millions upon millions of photos out there that don’t need a title to be successful. I really think it depends on the content of the shot. A title could be included to add humour etc to the shot, rather than something boring such as img001. I often think that photos, like books, would all look pretty much the same without a title & that using a title helps to complete the story.
i agree with what miki is saying, a title can add a lot of meaning.
it can also take it away.
Definitely think a title is important, even if it only is a identifying title as in birds/animal shots,
I always try to add a title, which sometimes is not easy, it has to fit!
