First attempt at gig shots…

My friend’s brother was playing a gig at Whelan’s last week, and I conveniently had just puchased my 50mm f1.8 the day before, so I took it upon myself to have a stab at some gig photography. The lighting was pretty horrendous (red spotlights for the most part, and DIM ones at that) but I didn’t want to bust out my flash because, well, that’s just RUDE. They were pretty happy with the shots, which is great, because I was just messing around for the most part. Here’s a few from the 108 shot set (some of them could be improved with a bit of cropping, but I haven’t gotten around to that bit yet)

    The lead singer rocking out:

Brian, the keyboardist (my friend’s brother. VERY difficult to photograph him as he was rarely lit, and has poor eyesight so he often has his face about 4″ from the keyboard):

The bassist. Lots of empty space at the top of this one, due to me trying to shoot over people’s heads (I was trying to be unobtrusive, since I wasn’t there in any official capacity).

    Edit, bassist cropped:

    Edit, two square crop conversions:

As always, click on the images to go to photo pages with links to bigger sizes.

i especially like the first one with the fanned lighting behind, but all in all a very good set

Ya I agree, looks great. First one is the best.

What ISO were you using ?

First shot is very good, and twice that considering it was your first go at gig shots!!!

The other two are a bit more lacking, maybe try them in B&W, or try reducing the red in them, but all in all, they lack the character and framing of the first one.

4 things that make gig shots are Eyes, Fingers, Light and Instruments… you can usually work 3 outta 4!

Very good all in all, any more?

I think the first one is excellent – really well captured. love the way the light is caught in that one and also the expression. The third one I would crop a bit tighter to just have the bass player fill the frame.

Well, the whole set is here (same link as above). These were all shot at ISO 1600, in RAW, then levelled and curved with RawShooter Premium, and Noise Ninja-ed on default settings. I do agree that some could use a bit of cropping, as I said above, and I’m gonna try some B&W conversions (since, basically, a ton of them are already black & red only) eventually, but at the moment I don’t really have time (buddy from Canada is here visiting, so I’m playing the entertainer for 2 weeks :))

Im gonna follow the trend and say the first one is very good.

The second and third arent amazing but I think the third could be salvaged a smalll bit with a crop. Try really closing in on him.

I think the last few you added were very strong – good dramatic shots.

Just a tip about noise ninja, from looking at your latest shots, it can be a bit too powerful, use it on a duplicate layer, then set your eraser on a lowish opacity, and give a rub over areas like the face etc!

Its the last in the posted series for me … I like the very intense expression – almost kissing the mic :)

The atmosphere of it in BW is gritty and very rock n roll … BUT ;) IMO it could use a bit more punch – maybe levels to boost the contrast or something…

I agree with LoGill on the last in the series, even though the subject is perfectly central it’s the most rock’n roll. Great shots all round though. 8)

I think I like the Keyboard pic the best.. don’t know why.
    They are all good though!

I like the first one. Good face expression and nice lights.
