First use of studio kit

Hi there, this is from my first stab at studio lighting with a portable kit.
    Taken with Nikon D200, Tokina 28-80 ATX pro, f 5.6, .125 second.

Not great at converting to B&W, using elements 4 at present – any suggestions / comments?

    Thanks

I think the shot is just too small (even when I followed the link) to really critique in detail. Can you post a larger version (not so large that we have to scroll to view the whole image)?

    Hi Ciaran,

hopefully this thread is not lost in the inflow of topics.
Been a bit busy but here is a larger version of the portrait.
Any tips welcome, especially as a few friends from the Malahide camera club have rented a studio & model for a portrait session this week and it gives me the chance to get some more practice in.

    Thanks & regards

Great expression, If I may suggest a few things:

A “toplight” (or hairlight) would give his hair some shine and differentiate it from the background.
The lighting on his face is a little flat. You can use shadows to change the shape of the face, I think in this subject’s case. I would have had the main-light to camera right so ass to broad light him and have less fill to give more modelling to his face.

The hardest thing in photography is to capture expressions. You caught this guy brilliantly.

Great. he looks nice and relaxed.
I always find it hard to get people to settle if I want to take their pics .
