Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 EX-DG

I saw some of you have this lens in their gear line up. I would like to hear some compliments and/or complaints about it. and some sample pictures would be great if possible. would 24mm be wide enough for landscape on 1.6 crop camera or should I look into Sigma 10-20mm?

    thanks in advance

    Unal,

If you take a look at my website (http://www.thewonderoflight.com) the majority of shots on it are taken with the Sigma 24-70mm. There is also a hidden directory (http://www.thewonderoflight.com/misc) with no thumbnails, but contains more shots, again shot with the Sigma. I love the lens and can’t fault it. It is perhaps a touch soft (only a touch!) when shot wide open and another perceived disadvantage maybe it’s size and weight. It’s a beast of a lens for the range it’s in.

In terms of landscape work I do find the 24mm limiting, sometimes even wishing I had the old kit lens on my camera which goes down to 18mm (those 6mm make all the difference).

I’m sure if you get it, you won’t regret it. A review of the lens can be found here http://www.photodo.com/topic_25.html

    Thanks ciaran,

I had a look at your website, there are some outstanding portrait shots which convinced me to order this lens :D

Originally I was thinking about Canon 24-70mm 2.8L but when it comes to the ??? then I looked into the sigma. Most of the rivews points out that Sigma produces comperable color and sharpness. As per loudy focus motor, I don’t think it would be louder than my 20D’s shutter. For the heavy size I think I would get used to it in a couple of weeks. Like most canon shooters I’d love to have a red “L” in my bag but with an huge price difference the Sigma is the best option so far.

The motor is a little loud but not at all as bad as people make out. Besides, the lens is so quick to lock on and it rarely hunts in and out, that the motor is only on for fractions of a second. As for the weight, I actually like the weight of it, it helps steady my hand if anything. Plus it feels really well balanced on my camera. I’m sure you’ll like it.

It was the first lens I bought and its the one that stays on my camera most. Focus is a bit noisy as ciaran pointed out, but it’s spot on. Sharp and quick and the macro on it is impressive.

I know you’ve already ordered it.. but “order it, you wont regret it” :)

I always thought that lens was like a brick ,very heavy for carrying around.
I thought the image quality was brilliant ,but I’d say try it out first on your camera and see what you think.

I use this lens as my walkabout. Watch out for anything more open than F4 being a bit soft, especially when there are specular highlights in the scene, the light can bounce around a bit. For a zoom, it is very impressive!

Don’t know about the Sigma version of this lens – I use the Tamron equivalent (Tamron AF 28-75mm f2.8 XR Di Zoom) and it’s a stellar performer – not the most robust of lenses, but for the price I paid for it, I can’t complain. Apparently it’s every bit as god (some say better) than the Canon L-series equivalent.

If you want unbiased user opinion on the Sigma lens, take a look at the following –

I borrowed the Sigma and didn’t like it as much as the 24-70L (also borrowed, no way I’m in the league to make the money to get a payback on that sort of money). The Sigma I found buzzy and not the greatest bokeh ever, while the Canon was lust at first photo, the only zoom that can trick you into thinking it’s a prime, including the instantaneous silent focus. If you can afford the entry price, you do get what you pay for. Think while I stay poor I’ll stick with my 50 f1.8 for portraits though, although I will be getting an OM-EOS adaptor so I can use my old Zuiko 135 f2.8 for the odd manual focus/manual metering portrait.
