LoGillParticipant
With all the great weather its great to be getting out and about in the evenings with the camera :0 and we’re spoiled with all the amazing sunsets these days.. I took this from the South Bull Pier a week, (of course, as usual … I had the wrong lens  so i couldn’t get closer)
Anyway these two lads were bringing in their catch , chatting away about their day (I could hear them from the pier, good Dub accents :D carry for miles) and it seemed like a nice simple life.. or so I thought anyway… Any comments/ recommendations?

MoyaParticipantLoGillParticipantMoyaParticipantLoGillParticipantNot so strange  – left the file with a capital letter – hopefully it should be visible now…..
MoyaParticipantAh there it is! Great sunset shot….I like the boat as a focal point….makes this interesting.
DaveCParticipantGreat example of why the horizon line doesn’t always have to be on the thirds.
Composition rules are there to be broken.LoGillParticipantThanks Dave – I had a bit of a debate about the horizon at home before I posted it  and I did toy with straightening it for a while … but I prefered the natural perspective looking along the pier at an angle in the direction of the boat so i left it .. I was sure everyone would be telling me that its crooked and I should fix it
They probably will nw :D
Lorraine
ciaranParticipantIts crooked and should be fixed :D
Dave was commenting on how the horizon is on the center (well would be if it was straight  ) It does break the normal rules of composition by not being on a third.. but I like it.
LoGillParticipant:oops: Well ok then – sorry dave… But I still say its the angle of the shot … Its not crooked :P
Lorraine
MoyaParticipantWhat about someone like me who actually chooses to have things crooked?!?! And that’s not just in photos!! I don’t always like straight horizons. I dunno….my humble opinion…I like it just the way it is!
jlangParticipantI don’t think the shore line should be horizontal in the shot or at least if you were standing there and measured the angle, I don’t think it would be because the land is arcing away from you.
Apart from the horizon, I love the colour and the boat hidden in the foreground.
DaveCParticipantThe horizon line of water should always be dead straight because in reality that’s the gravity is.
That’s exactly what I meant Ciaran, about the thirds.
nolongerParticipantI was going to comment on the horizon… but then I noticed that the *land* itself seems fairly straight, which throws me off with the water being not quite straight.
LoGillParticipantI even used a tripod for this and lined up the horizon :) Oh the self doubt ….
Picture this … :)
Standing on the pier at South Bull – looking accross Dublin bay to North Bull (land) and then looking left along the line of land curving back to the Docks in the direction of passing boat .. .. Am I mad – Should this be straight ? … I still think its the angle of the perspective but the gravity comment is throwing me :D – its hard to argue with the laws of physics
