Which Lense to use
-
Jack_RyanParticipant
I’m going to a wedding as a guest in a few weeks and I was thinking of trying to snap something that I could get printed as a second present (if its good enough or just delete if its not)
I’m undecided astowhich lense to use, the 50 prime but I’m leaning to the 18-70 kit lense
I just want to bring 1 lense so as not to give any expectations because the few of you here that know my work will be thinking I’m after a lucky shot
thing is you would probably be right
MarkKeymasterI’d bring the 18-70 for the flexibilty it’ll give you, however it might not be bright enough ?
The 50mm might be a bit limiting, especially for getting some of the group together.Anyhow there are some wedding photography experts in here you can advise better.

ciaranParticipantWelcome to the forum John, I mean Jack… John… Jack… ah what ever! :)
The 50mm is superb, but unless you’ve had lots of practice knowing what looks good with it, I’d suggest you go with the flexibility that the zoom offers. Stick your SB600 on it and away you go!
LoGillParticipantWelcome to the forum Jack … Hope you enjoy it :)
Why don’t you stick the 18-70 on the camera and sneak the 50m (quite a compact lens) in the car glove box – that way you coiver all your bases.
:D Tadaaaaa !

No way are you going to manage to sneak in a 50m lens LOL  You’ll probably need a forklift to carry that baby in!
– Thorsten.
P.S. – Apologies to LoGill for picking up on her typo! I just couldn’t resist!!!
DaveCParticipantIf your set on bringing just one lens, I’d recommend that you bring the 50mm prime.
shrapnelMemberas you’re not the official photographer, i would take the 50mm because that’s what you’re going to get the best portraits with. you’ll be moving backwards and forwards all the time to find the best range, but hopefully after a few glasses of champagne, that should come pretty easily. :D

jlangParticipantI’ve gone to a few weddings with my 50mm lens. I figure they have a photographer anyway so there’s no pressure on me to get any particular shots. I’m not getting paid so I may as well enjoy myself rather than carrying a huge weight. The large aperture means I don’t need a flash in the church and get nice shots of guests milling around outside the church or while the formal photo session is taking place. Once I get a few nice shots of the people I know, I’m pretty happy. Haven’t hit any of the receptions photographically yet, although there’s usually some drunken snapshots on my compact camera by the morning.
One couple had a party in their house back in Dublin the following night and I got 1 hour photo prints into a nice (but cheap) album. The bride was so happy with them that she took the album on her honeymoon – to my embarrassment when I found out weeks later.
Jack_RyanParticipantthanks for that
a bit for me to think about now, but I’ve 1 shot in mind and I will prob go with the 50mm,
AnonymousParticipantHi Jack
If you want to get this shot inside i would stick with the 50mm,i’m assuming its a prime at around 1.2-1.8 ish..great speed for those tricky indoor shots where you are trying to mix falsh with ambient.
However if youre sneaky enough to fire a few behing the official photographer i would take the zoom for its versatility.
Enjoy the day..
