3 is beautiful, I’ve never seen one of these, are they the same size as a small white? Is it on a blackberry bush?

They’re tiny around the size of a Common Blue i.e. around half the size of a common white. They arey very territorial and sit on prominent areas (e.g. blackberry bushes) in grass land areas looking for fights!

Much the same habits as the speckled wood then

Generally they prefer more open non-intensive farmland and even waste ground with plenty of thistles and dock (dogleaf).

I like the third one from these photos because the composition.
The butterflies are not sharp enough for the macro shots.

    3 gets my vote also.

I’d maybe crop in a little tighter at the bottom of the frame… but I love the DOF, particularly how the tip of the leaf closest to its (um, pick a word Dave…) antennae (?) is also *nearly but not quite* in focus.
