Louth coast again…

Went out for sunrise Sunday morning but it didnt really happen… well it did but not very nicely, if ye know what I mean…! I started playing around with the moving water and stones… all with the 5D and 24mm Tilt and Shift…:
(not sure i like the one above… you can be the judge)
Sh*t maybe thats too many… sure give out to me if it is…!

Fantastic images Richie! The detail recorded in the foreground stones and rocks is about as good as it gets.

I would be interested to know about your filter technique. I assume you were using a polariser and ND-grads here, but did you also use a normal ND filter to increase the length of the exposure?
I assume you shoot in RAW, which converter do you use? Do you make many adjustments in PS, or rely on the filters to get the great even exposures you have here?
My favourites are the first two.
I would make a little bit darker the last one and crop the sky.
The third photo has good thematic. I would shot the stone more closer as macro.Woo. Where to begin!?
1 and 2 are awesome, although looking longer at 2, I’m thinking it’s a little bland/empty. Maybe that’s what you were going for (empty, not bland!), maybe not.
3rd is a good idea, I just don’t think you’ve quite nailed it. Something to do with all that blurred background/sky I feel. That, and the key point of interest isn’t that… well, interesting!
4, I don’t think the darkened lump of concrete top left does much for the shot… if anything, it almost takes away from the interesting line/detail of the stumps and all those stones. I realise without the horizon it loses everything, but I’d prefer not to have that concrete in the frame at all. Maybe shoot the poles from a slightly different angle?
The final image emits a “clinging to life” feel that I quite like… and suffers IMO only because of the blurry reflection of the rock. Without that it would have been even silkier! I love the crisp line of the horizon against the light pink sky, although you could perhaps lighten it a touch on the left of the frame (where it looks as though it’s raining!) to give the whole image a more definite “split,” if that makes sense?
I really like image 1 & 2. Maybe crop off the a little from the 1st.
image 3 & 5 don’t do it for me though. I think the soft out of focus water around the rock don’t help.
Number 4 I like alot.

Brandyman… cheers for the comment… I have to say that the 24mm Tilt and Shift is a wonderful landscape lens… extermely sharp from edge to edge… a bit of hyperfocal focusing (or whatever ye call it) and ta da, everything pin sharp.
SteveD… yes i do use filters but as it happens never more than one at a time… I tend only to use a polarizer when there are blue skies and green fields… I know it enhances all colours and sorts out haze and reflections but it also slightly degrades my image. I only use one ND Grad filter (Cokin version) to balance the exposure on boring sky days and at high contrast sunrises and sunsets.. I also bracket exposures and sometimes combine them in Photoshop. I always shoot Raw when doing landscape or architecture. At the end of the day I want the best possible image and i find that Raw gives me this with the amount of control you have.
Roberto… Cheers… the last one is already cropped and i cant really go any further without loosing quality but i agree its a little unbalanced… I wanted to go closer to the rock but it wasnt possible as the tide was coming in quick..! The 3rd shot was really a test of the tilt function on the Tilt and Shift lens… i just liked the colour of the rock…!
Dave… yeah i love a minimal feeling to a landscape… so in some cases the emptiness is what I am after. I agree about the third shot… as said above more of an experiment than anything… I dont mind the concrete in the 4th… I thinnk it breaks an otherwise boring horizon… I did try different angles but felt this was the most balanced. The blurry reflection in the fourth is from the exposure lenght being 4-5 seconds…
Brian C… Thanks…. As said above in image 5 the blurry reflection is actually not out of focus but caused by the movement of the water around the rock… As it happens I was up at 4:30 and on the beach for 5… I was there for sunrise but it didnt happen…! Basically no colour at all in the sky…! This happens quite often with me even after studing various weather forecasts…!

I rarely browse through the landscape section.. but boy I’m glad I did in this case. Shot’s 1, 2 & 5 are just outstanding. Superb images. Thanks for sharing them and more importantly your techniques. Super images Richie

Simply stunning…….1 is a brilliant shot,worthy of any abrakebabra wall in the country…..only jokin :lol: All the images are great but 1 is a cracker.I cant offer any c+c because landscape is not my thing,very nice work indeed!

Sorry snaphappy…. the first is a 3 second exposure at f20 with the 5D and 24 tilt and shift… the second is 5 seconds at f22… bot with cokin grad filter as well…!

number one is definately my favourite of the lot.
Thats not to say the others aren’t great, as a whole, Im very very impressed by them. I think you’ve made excellent use of lines in some of them and I’m seriously impressed.
