Can anyone tell me if it is possible to open NEF files in photoshop elements 4.0 without going through nikon capture first. As i dont want to have to buy the nikon capture software after my free 30 day trial is up.

you need to get the RAW plug-in for photoshop (i have no idea though if it works in elements or not, but can’t see why it wouldn’t though)

I’ve been using elements 4 with the RAW plug-in for my Nikon files and it works fine.

Can’t remember from where I downloaded the plug-in, but if I do I’ill post the detail on the thread.

Just in case anyone doesn’t know, one of the benefits of Canon is that they don’t charge extra for their RAW conversion software, so you don’t need to get any extra software if you don’t want too (and don’t let anyone tell you it’s useless because it’s not – I use it as my principle RAW converter because it’s fast, easy to use and turns out good results too). This is something that’s often overlooked when people buy into a system.

You can always use Nikon View (which is free and has basic editing from NEF, bit like the free Canon software that Thor mentioned). The Adobe Camera Raw for Elements 4 works I’m pretty sure. Nikon Capture has some additional editing functions like automatic CA correction, I normally use PS and ACR.
