Canon announces the new 400D – 10M pixel DSLR with dust removal. Hopefully any upgrades to the 5D, 30D and the 1DII etc will incorporate this feature as well.

Quote – “To assure fine photo results, Canon employs dust-resistant materials and structures to dramatically reduce dust generation within the EOS 400D DIGITAL. Measures also are taken to prevent dust from adhering to the sensor due to static electricity. A remarkable new function is the Self Cleaning Sensor Unit that actually vibrates the low-pass filter to remove dust particles from it. Additionally, by targeting image data for leftover dust after cleaning, the Dust Delete Function within the bundled software can be used after shooting to remove dust spots that may remain on the captured image. For photos that are consistently distinct and clear, this dust reduction system is essential.”

As much as I love to use and support Canon, I really don’t think the dust removal technology features are anything exciting. It’s all marketing hype as far as I’m concerned. All that the ultrasonic dust removal system does is blow the dust off the sensor – but where does it go? Nowhere, it’s still there waiting to be picked up again by the sensor! And the software solution won’t be much use to people either. Very few Canon users currently use Canon’s proprietery software. I can’t see more people adopting it simply because of a new dust removal feature.

IMHO the dust removal thingie would only be useful in the field when you cant clean the sensor properly. If canon were serious about dust there would be a flashing light in the viewfinder when the sensor detected any dust.

Anyway I’m hoping the Mk3 gets this and all the Mk2 owners dump theirs in a frenzy [doubtful]

As far as I am concerned, anything to aid Dust removal is heaven sent. Olympus has had it’s version for several years, now Sony and Pentax.

At least it’s good to know that Canon is listening and trying to take steps to resolve the issue.

Yip, it is marketing hype but Canon probably feels it has to keep up with the competition at the lower end and match the specs of the oposition. Unfortunately it is hype that sells cameras at that end of the market.

    Here is an amusing point!

“Dust falling off the filter during cleaning adheres to the sticky material of the retaining component at the LPF base.”

Looks like they are using “fly paper” for those dust bunnies!

Interesting. Still wouldn’t be a factor I would consider when buying. In the four years that I’ve been using a digital camera I’ve never had a dust problem that could not be dealt with by a blast of clean air. I bought a sensor swabs kit and it’s still sitting there unopened!

I can only imagine that a constantly flashing light in the viewfinder would be an uncommonly large pain in the ass. No sensor is ever 100% free of dust.

The EOS 400D will be available from late September 2006 at a UK price of ?649.99 (body only), or ?719.99 as a kit with the EF-S 18-55mm lens. The EF 50mm f/1.2L USM lens will be available in late September 2006 at a UK price of ?1149.99 and the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM will be available in late September 2006 at a UK price of ?989.99.

Looks like the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM will be on my Christmas shopping list :D

Right, I could be completly wrong with this, but does that mean it’s also gonna be safer to swab clean for dust, considering there’s now an extra filter in front of it?

I’d say the fact that a sensor can move ,will mean that you can’t try and clean the sensor as you will break the mechanics of it.
I’m sure at some stage a crud would stick to the sensor.
Anyhoo, don’t think it’s real yet, have to see canon publish the news first.

Oh it’s real alright – it’s been published on the various Canon websites during the week, including the UK website – see their press release “EOS 400D set to meet massive consumer demand.”

Thanks ecp ,looks great ,I’m not into the fact that the sensor moves at all though.
What happens if the sensor goes off line slightly ,will all the images be out of focus ??.

See how it goes ,I’d buy it myself if starting off or upgrading. 20D/30D still have more benefits though ,meter at top and bigger.
