Anybody wanting a cheap way to get L quality or very close at affordable prices (and doesn’t mind manual focus) would do well to look into getting an OM-EOS adaptor. The Olympus OM-system Zuiko lenses are available pretty cheap secondhand, and in my case it doesn’t come any cheaper than having three already, just collecting dust! I just bought a 50mm f1.4 as well for ?60 because I’ve heard bad reports about the Canon f1.4 USM being flimsy (plus in the sort of low light stuff I want a 1.4 for, autofocus doesn’t work anyway).
There are lots of choices for lens adaptors, from cheap Chinese ones to very expensive German and Japanese ones. In my experience the cheap one from here http://stores.ebay.ie/CIRRUS-ADAPTER-WHOLESALE_To-Canon-Eos-body-adapters_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ1793737QQftidZ2QQtZkm works a treat. The mounted lens feels absolutely rock solid, and all three lenses focus to infinity. And they feel so nice to use too?damped focus rings, proper aperture rings, just like on a pukka camera ;)
The Zuiko lenses are also extremely compact despite their big glass and fast openings. No bulky AF motors. Here’s a 135mm f2.8 on my D30. It’s considerably smaller than the Canon 17-40L and positively tiny compared to Canon teles.
And bokeh samples from two lenses.
Soligor 35-70mm f2.5-3.5 (in its day this was just a so-so cheap 35mm zoom, but on digital it’s in the centre-frame sweet spot and really rather nice)
