Which photography magazines do people buy every month……

I subscribe to Practical Photography and Photography Monthly, but lately I am finding a fair bit of duplication. I also occasionally buy Digital Photo Magazine, which I may soon subscribe to.

I used to buy “What Digital Camera” but stopped buying it when I finally got the Canon 20D.
I saw a copy recently, and it seems to have changed from pure camera reviews, to a mixture of reviews and general articles on photography and digital imaging.

Anyone got any other magazines they would recommend?
(I am not particularly interested in the “Photoshop” type magazines)

    Monthly:

    – Practical Monthly
    – Outdoor Photography
    – Photography Monthly
    – Black and White Photography on occasion

    Weekly:

    – Amateur Photography

Haven’t gone for any of the digital photography ones as I figured they might be too focused on the
post-processing and not enough on the photography element.

I’d be interested to hear if any of the ‘digital’ ones are worth a look.

    I usually get the following:

? American Photo (quarterly or so)
    ? Rangefinder Magazine
? Professional Photographer (the US one, as a PDF file)
? Professional Photographer (the UK one)
    ? Digital Photographer (occassionally)

I would often look at Photography Monthly at the newsagents, but it’s not the magazine it used to be when it first started. It’s very much gone down the road that Practical Photography has and is full of padding.

Being a Canon user, I also subscribe to EOS Magazine.

I find the US magazines mentioned above particularly good value for money, even though they have to come all the way across the Atlantic Ocean. The UK magazines, on the other hand, are quite expensive and don’t always have a lot of interesting material in them.

Mark – I think Digital Photographer is definitely worth a look – it covers everything from business practices, photography, photographer profiles, and of course touches on the software element as well. It’s one of the few magazines that’s aimed at both the professional and amateur user.

I buy black and white photography ,I don’t do black and white shots but I find it interesting to read about the photographers that are interviewed in it.
With regards to the other magazines ,I can’t help thinking it’s an advertising fiasco.
The same few “digital orientated” magazines ,seem to be layed out almost like they are from the same press.
Just to fill the shop shelves.

Will second “black and white photography”, it has great tech articles on drakroom techniques both digtal and film and also articles on lighting and other items, and the photographers featured are inspiring. Also the general photography news is great.

Interesting thread. I had thought of opening a similar one sometime this week, but have been pipped to the post! :-)

I buy 3 magazines every month:
    Digital Photo (subscription)
    Photoshop Creative (subscription)
    Photography Monthly

The two I subscribe to are excellent and I intend to continue their subscriptions indefinetely. I have every issue of Photoshop Creative since it launched around a year ago. Photography Monthly is a borderline case ? much like several of its competitors. There?s a lot of padding. I?m thinking of dropping it at the end of the year and subscribing to Amateur Photographer after that. I?ve been very impressed with the 3-4 issues of it which I?ve bought and the fact that they can maintain this standard weekly is amazing.

On a related point, is anyone a member of the Bureau of Freelance Photographers and getting their newsletter and magazine f2 regularly? For someone simply wanting the buzz of getting 2-3 photos published in the year, is it any good?

    Thanks in advance.

Practical photography every month for the last 4 years…. getting very bored of it now as it repeats itself a lot and yes there is a lot of ‘padding’…! Professional Photographer is a very good mag as is Outdoor Photography both of which I buy every now and then…! Computer Arts magazine is good sometimes for its Photoshop tutorials. I also subscribe to National Geographic purely for the amazing imagery every month…!

i alwasy buy Practical Photography, great mag.

I find Amateur Photography isn’t great at all.

Photography monthly is ok, nothing special.

Black and White photography is absolutely terrible in my opinion.

    I cant stand it.

None – I check them out in Easons and buy if they have something particularly interesting in them.

I used to buy them more regularly to keep up with reviews, new gadgets etc. – get all that from the internet now.

Much the same as yourself Frank but I buy mostly high fashion mags (Irish tatler, Image etc) to see what standard i should be aiming for.

I’m a regular Irish Tatler buyer myself – just didn’t mention it because it’s not really a photography magazine (and the looks I sometime get when buying it are comical!) I also find i-D magazine is full of great images.

    Interesting replies to this thread…..
Incidentally, I was flicking through an old copy of Photography Monthly earlier today, and came across an article about using a photocopier to take images of various still life. (Yes, you read me right, a photocopier!) I remember thinking when I first read it, is this an April Fool? I still cannot believe they wasted several pages of the magazine with such crap…….
Now Thorsten, how would you feel if your great seascape image came up against a photocopy in a competition…….

Enough to make you start reading Readers Digest instead of Photography Monthly?! Beggars belief imho

    Hi Flipflip/Everyone

The above comment interests me. I have bought only 3-4 issues of Amateur Photographer and was impressed by them. But maybe the issues I bought were not representative of the magazine in general. So you’d do me a favour if you talk me out of subscribing to a magazine that isn’t really all that good.

Maybe we’re looking for different things from magazines. The reasons I’d have subscribed to Amateur Photographer are:
    – it has a huge amount of up-to-date industry and product news
    – it has ads by almost everyone in the photography industry
    – the tests and reviews it does are done very comprehensively and very technically
    – 4 copies of Amateur Photographer in the month will have far more articles than any other monthly for only slightly more money (if you subscribe)
    – I’m not looking to it for practical, hands-on articles as I source those elsewhere.

    Comments will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

Why if you dont mind me asking, I find the tech articles quite good and the reviews very honest.
