Black and White Strand for C&C

  • This is a recent shot taken as a request for someone that i am getting printed. I was under severe time restraints to get an image of the area (long story) and i only have until the weekend to get it printed. It has to be black and white as it is part of a set but anything that anyone can add would be great. Thanks in advance..

As this was printed for a client, may I ask what the brief was.

It’s hard to give a specific C+C for an image that has obviously been shot with a specific goal in mind. If I was to critique based purely on it’s photographic merit I would say that your sky is rather washed out on the left hand side. I would also say that the small dark feature at the front left is a distraction.

On the positive side I really like the right hand side where the light seems to lead the eye along the ripples. Have you considered a square crop. Again the brief may dictate your format.

I’d be in agreement with Andy for the most part on this one. There is also a very distracting dark patch in the top right hand corner, and you might crop another small section to eliminate the dark patch just left of centre along the bottom of the frame. Other than that, I quite like the image, very moody.

Thanks Andy and Rob, your comments are appreciated. There is no formal brief, a friend of mine from Australia got engaged here and wanted a photo of the area, the reason it is black and white is that it is part of the set of engagement photos that i have for her and need to have them fully ready for her fiancee to bring back to australia at the weekend. When i have time i will try to get a better image of the area but i want this one to go in with the set that i already have.

I am working on fixing the sky and a better crop.

There seems some vignetting in the shot. A couple of curve/mask layers should allow you tpo boost the contast and lighten the beach (show better reflections) and the same with the sky, just darken a bit. I like the general feel of the piece.

Thanks Allinthemind, i havent as yet got down and dirty with curves but i have always been meaning to maybe i can use this shot for a bit of practice in the future. I really need to find myself a good tutorial and just go through it once and for all.
