I’ve not used one… but i had serious gadget lust when i saw them at the Photofest event earlier this year, its on my fantasy list ;) .. pricey though as i recall ?stg 2000 upwards?

As regards familiarisation time … the demo looked pretty intuitive to me, so i wouldn’t have thought that would be a problem.

EDIT: are they exhibiting at Photovision on Thursday – i think they might be ….

Yikes, ?2,000! That must have been the Cintiq you were looking at! The entry level Graphire 4 is much more affordable than that (starting at ?69.99) and perfectly adequate for most users. If your budget can stretch, then it might be worth looking at the Intuos range – these are the industry standard tablets (for photography use at least – there are better tablets available if you’re in the design/CAD arena). Don’t bother getting anything larger than A5 – you’ll find that a bigger tablet is actually harder to use, although you would think otherwise. I have an A4 tablet (albeit not a Wacom one) and I hardly ever use it because it’s just too big. I’m planning on getting a Wacom Graphire 4 XL (?144.98) in the not too distant future.

Yeah it was the Cintiq I fell I love with – typical  … I haven’t looked at any of the smaller ones, although my laptop is very ikkle – and it would be good for working on photos to have the tablet….

    Hmmmmm…

    I have a Wacom Intuos A5 tablet.

It doesn’t take that long to get used to – something like getting used to driving on the other side of the road and using your other hand to change gear.

Thorsten is basically right about A5 being ideal and A4 too cumbersome. I’d add one amendment to that. It is ideal if you only use one monitor. I use a 2-monitor setup and that partitions the tablet. One part of it is for one monitor and one part of it is for the other monitor. At that point I think that A5 is less ideal – still very usable – but less ideal and A4 might be better.

Intuos A5 and Graphire A5 prices are very reasonable – certainly under Eu200 and not anywhere near $2000!

Go on, Lorraine, seriously. You can just do things so much easier, quicker and generally more intuitively with a tablet than when you’re faffing around with a mouse. Feels so much nicer to make actual brush strokes as opposed to guiding the mouse in approximately the right direction and hoping for the best :-)

    IMHO anyway!

Picked up a wacom graphire 4 for about ?110 from the wacom online shop, really has improved workflow and more importantly comfort whilst working the a5 size makes it really handy for having it resting on your lap too if you like me often have a cluttered desk, increases accuracy a hundred fold for tricky selections or adjustments, best money i spent in a long time

last time i checked they were selling a 2nd hand graphire 4 on the wacom shop for ?45

    Hi Shane

    Welcome to the forum :)

I’m seriously considering one of these, but your post raises a question for me ….. ehem… mostly I’m sat on the couch with my laptop when I edit shots (blush).. there’s alot less liklihood of me moving to a desk.

So, I have a bit of a brain fart kind of question for those of you using these … do you think that this needs to be on the desk or is this exactly what i need to make my couch potatoe editing even easier ? (please be yes, please be yes!)

howya lorraine, this is exactly what you need, ive often used it at home on couch with laptop on coffe table and tablet on lap legs draped over armchair, or in the classic secondary school position of balancing on hind legs of chair with tablet on lap, its small light and precise, powered via the usb of your pc or laptop, great for all couch potatos so, since getting it though my backs in much better shape too as i dont have my arm arched over badly positioned mouse all day

I have a Wacom Graphire 4 in A6 size, and I find it perfectly adequate for photo editing. I work on a desk (the dog ‘s got the couch) and it has seriously relieved my repetitive injury syndrom on shoulder and elbow. Obviously spending less time on the computer was not an option

Si .. I don’t think a lazer mouse will work on my couch ?

Sylvie ! -welcome to the forum – I am so relieved my couch editing days are not over… I think the tablet may even be cheaper than buying a desk … so thats probably all the justification I need at this stage ;)

Ben – Sorry for dominating the thread  – BLUSH
