I’m struggling with this photo…
I think it has something… but I’m not sure I’ve caputured it.. So, is there something more I can do here or do I scrtach it and reshoot ?
HELP !!
L
elludeParticipantSteveDParticipantLorraine,
I think the subject is interesting, but the composition here doesn’t exploit the potential.
Look at those 3 great windows with the soft fluffy grass in front….how about a shot straight on, with a panoramic crop including only the windows and the bank of grass. I’m thinking of a windy day with a long exposure to soften the grass against the hard window frames.
Wait a minute, thats not long grass, thats a feckin bush…..doh! Ah well you get the idea anyway!
joe_elwayParticipantGreat subject… I just started a pet project to shoot stuff like this a few weeks back. The stone wall is a feature worth including but I think this angle hides too much. Would it be possible to shoot from the left of this position at 45 degrees showing the front and the gable while minimising the bushes?
I wonder if there’s some way of using the holes in the roof or the interior (looking out)…. this creative stuff isn’t exactly my strong suit.
RobertoMemberLorraine,
I like this photo. It has nice dramatic atmosphere. I would put some grain on it.LoGillParticipantCheers all !!
ellude – thanks :) when you see this place and the views it has its amazing no one has restored it and moved in, thats how the name came to me, when I looked at it I was thnking in my mind how to bring it to back to life (mad I know) :)
roberto – grain.. good suggestion, I love grain, why didn’t I think of grain
joe & steve – You can barely see the house at all from the front… and there were donkeys and cows in the way… honest!! so the side angle was as close as I could get at the time without climbing gear :) and the wall attracted me to … but next time I’ll try to get closer to the front and see if I can get a better position to try your suggestion.
Thanks for the encouragment and tips on this.. I really appreciate it .. already written into my shooting notebook. I really like this, but its so weird the way it just feels something is missing still.. Anyway I might take another run at editing it untill I get to re-shoot it. Although who knows, next time I go it could be a cul-de-sac of holiday homes.

gerardkParticipantI like this picture a lot too – I am not sure about the mid part of the roof – there seems to be a kind of halo-type affect going on – which is probably natural but a little bit distracting imo -I would probably try and tone that down a fraction if it were mine. I really like the sky – especially on the left where it goes off to the horizon.
AnonymousParticipantHi Lorraine
I did something like this years ago but shot it in infra-red on illford film, mixed with grain it turned out really cool. Your capture is very appealing although i dont see a how you could improve it more?
Ben 8)AliParticipantNice image Lorraine :). Great dramatic sky. I think it’s lacking something though, not quite sure what it is but to me it looks a tad bit flat
and as Steve said the bush is really taking away from it. I did a quick edit. Sharpen, brought out the highlights a bit more and a curve mask
to give the bush more depth and to bring out the stone work on right a bit more.LoGillParticipantGerardk, you are right – thats a cloud popping up like a halo over the roof .. (you can see the lighter area through the roof)
Ben, Thanks ;)
Ali, Thats a pretty nice edit, it definately adds contrast …Thanks :) It definately missing something though –   If I can get “higher” I might be able to get an angle over the bushes ….
Thanks a million for taking the time to look, comment and edit ;) I’m going to start this image again from scratch (back to basics so to speak) and will definately be trying to shoot the location again.

joe_elwayParticipantThe only thing I can think of to get clear of the bushes is a step ladder ;-)
Don’t forget to get some detail shots. That window on the left with the low sil might be a candidate. The interrior looking at the interior roof carpenty on a sunny morning mightn’t be bad either.
griangrafParticipantHi Lo,
Cool shot. Did you take in colour or B & W. I do agree with you on it possibly missing something. I think the background (i.e. sky) and the house seem to be sitting uneasily with each other. As suggested earlier a grain might sort that out

MJLoGillParticipantThis shot has been driving me nuts  I’ve edited and re-edited it but I still think it fails – anyway I’ve finally decided the problem is the subject not the processing – if that makes any sense at all.. – I’ll leave you with my final edit – thanks to everyone who made suggestions and edits
