Hanging on my wall…
-
AllinthemindParticipant
This is an old photograph from a series of street shots I did on people in the background watching someone. I have 2 of these pictures on my wall in my office (I don’t normally display my own work). I was having a really bad day last year and happened across this picture on my PC, it made me realise that my life aint so bad. Do you have a picture of yours on your wall for these moments?
Si
This is the unedited version, I was inside a bar (no surprise there), it was freezing outside, there’s a light dusting of snow on the ground. This guy came in to go to the loo, he was so miserable, crying, miles away in his mind. He had a big scar on his head and looked to be at the end of his tether. You can see the reflection of my shirt in the window if you look for it (I got rid of this for the printed version). B&W film.
AllinthemindParticipant..and to balance it up, this one was part of the same series on a different day, again, taken from inside a shop through glass at this boy being totally dumbfounded by the shop assistant and her remote control blow-up robot!
RobertoMemberI like the first shot.
Did you try to crop out the top part with the bus, building and people?
I think that the photo with the guy and empty street will give more dramatic effect.AllinthemindParticipantThanks Roberto, I didn’t try and crop them out, they add to the “Read” of the picture and also give it a context (I think). There’s a natural top-left to bottom-right read with them in the shot along with the kerbside line coming in from bottom left.

AliParticipantRobMemberNice work Si. I like both shots very much. Just one small point though – in the second image it looks as though the adult on the bench in the background is watching this child with some amusement. A greater depth of field might have brought this aspect of the image into slightly sharper – though not too sharp – focus, which for me would double the ‘narrative’ of this photograph. I hope I’m managing to explain what I mean in a not too idiotic manner..
EddieParticipantThe second shot is a classic, wonderfully simple image with some magic light. super.
AllinthemindParticipantThanks folks, Rob, I see exactly what you mean, it was for a series of pictures so I wanted to keep the feel and DoFs similar in all of them. If I recall, they were all taken at F4 on a 50mm. Another one below (excuse the wonky verticals)
Si
RobMemberWonky verticals excused. This is a cracking shot. Those eyes are electrifying and that expression is brilliant. Was this posed or captured just on a quick turn? Great image.
Rob.
