First post, but some of you might have seen this one already, as I had this in the other boards for almost a week now. All sorts of criticism welcome! :)
RobMemberExcellent first post, wonderful colours and a perfect horizon :) Good composition and not too typical with the rising sun just off centre. It’s almost a shame about the birds to the right of the sun and the boat, or whatever it is, just to the left. Great capture though. Well done 8)
SteveDParticipantI like: the position of the sun, the wispy clouds.
I dislike: the blown out area in the cloud, the orange in the border.
Suggestions: try to darken down the corners of the image to draw the eye into the scene.Conmike12ParticipantReally great shot .Works very well for me.Lovely colour and composition.
positronMemberthanks for the comments guys, much appreciated!!
SteveD, I was not too sure about the orange in the border myself, but I guess I got carried away with borders (it was first time with borders!!). Not sure how to darken the corners, but I will figure out something (thanx to google), and will give it a go! Thanks again!
LoGillParticipantWelcome to the forum – great introductory post, I really like it.. The colours, tones and the calm feeling you captured is great .. but I think Steve’s suggestion to darken the corners is really interesting, I’d probably give that a go ;)
Anyway.. I ramble .. !

positronMemberThanks Lorraine, I think I am going to get addicted to all these lovely comments…!!
Thanks Steve (again) for the link on how to do the blur on corners – I will give it a go too (with my 30 day PhotoElements license).
positronMemberNo, this is NOT from me trying to darken the corners of the first photo (well, with my kind of Photoshop knowledge (or the lack of) it could happen alright!) – this is a different one, but from same place, same day! :)
No silly lines in border this time – solid black does looks better (thanks Steve) – I made it a bit thicker at the bottom and was hoping to something clever there, but couldn’t figure out what/how…
I am not sure if I should post here or as a new thread… here goes…
positronMemberOkay Steve, here’s my shot at it – first time playing around with Photoshop (of any kind), so please do be kind! (I am not saying I will improve or anything.. but.. why waste an excuse!! :D)
I “”touched up”” the birds, some easy-to-remove clouds, ‘remove noise’ etc, not sure if my attempt at the edge burn worked or not, I had to use this tutorial for PS Elements

Cheers,

SteveDParticipantPositron,
Good job removing the extra bits from the scene.
Not sure if your burning technique was extreme enough for my tastes! Here is my attempt, which was made by duplicating the original image and changing the blend mode to multiply.
Not to everyones taste, but I love it:
Mick451ParticipantVery nice indeed.
I like the blown bits, they make it more graphic.
Really like the retouch too, Steve.positronMemberSteveD wrote:

Thanks Steve, you are too nice or polite! Because I just figured out this morning (on way to work) that I didn’t get the gradient tool settings right – I don’t think it did anything at all!
I like the edge burn idea and your version of it, although I might leave it a bit brighter than that – thanks again, I learned something new!!
cheers,
Pos.
positronMemberThanks Mick!! (great job on the ‘lonely cloud mirrored’, in your flickr!! :D )
LoGillParticipantrichiehatchMemberHi Pos
I think its a lovely shot…. the crop is just right for the shot… i would remove the birds from the image as they only distract from what is a simple and effective shot. The second is nice too. The plain black border is much better than the other one.
Must get out to Bettystown or Laytown soon again for sunrise… here is one i took a while back in laytown…
