After taking another look at a few shots of Jessica Hart I took ages ago, I played around with giving each a different intrepretation. So just for a bit of variety here’s the minimal look…
a variation of a C41 film in E6 chemicals cross-processed grungy effect…
and a futuristic / elemental effect…
C&C welcome :)
AliParticipantHowdy Peter :) great shots, i absolute LOVE the second shot, love the position in the frame, post processing, everything.
really like the composition in the first. Although third is good shot, i think the other two just really really stand out :).
SUPER!!! Well done and thx a mil again for the DVDs.Positive PressureMemberCheers Ali,
Thanks for the very positive response. Yeah, I agree the third shot is the weakest of the three and maybe doesn’t sit well with the other two. I think it’s best if I refrain from going into Meatloaf mode and sing ‘two out of three ain’t bad’. :DThe idea for the cross-processed look in the second shot was probably triggered by one of the tutorials in Martin Evening’s book, Adobe Photoshop CS2 for Photographers. Apart form being a guru in all things PS related, he’s also a very good fashion photographer in his own right.
Josie was a real star for that series of shots and such a versatile model, she was able to give exactly the attitudes and looks I wanted. After that, it wasn’t difficult to build on those at the post-processing stage.
RobertoMemberI like the second shot because the colours and tones. The expression and composition is good.
The first photo is good as well. I personally don’t like the b&w body and colour neckles in fashion photo. Ok, it’s bring up the neckles but I have strange cold feeling.elludeParticipantNot too mad about the first one but really like the second and third pics.
Jessica looks great! She was a fantastic model and I was really sorry to learn she has now quit modelling.
AllinthemindParticipantPositive PressureMemberYeah, definitely agree with those sentiments guys. It’s a real pity one of our best fashionistas has hung up her gloves. Maybe if the campaign gets enough support, we might see a comeback. :)

PeteTheBlokeMemberI’m not often in this section. Are these “fashion” because of the necklace?
jb7ParticipantPeteTheBlokeMemberAn innocent question, that’s all. It’s got to be the hair or the necklace, and I was wondering which.
???

I think it’s a fair point. I’ve often deliberated whether a particular image belongs in here or over in the People forum. I think there can be a great deal of overlap and it’s not always easy to decide. I suppose anything in the Fashion forum could equally qualify for the People forum but not the other way around.
Positive PressureMemberWell these shots weren’t about the hair; otherwise the first shot DEFINITELY wouldn’t have cut the mustard! So yeah, they are based on the necklace this fine young lady is wearing.
Are these “fashion” because of the necklace?
Here goes a roundabout answer to a straightforward question. I read a quote recently by a much more authorative voice on fashion:- “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street; fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” – Coco Chanel It just so happens this quote pretty much sums up my view of fashion and by extension, fashion photography in a neat little nutshell.
I hope necklace in these shots compliments the wearer, but rather than a taking a literal interpretation, where the product is shown AS IS; the intention was to give the shots a bit more attitude and hopefully aspirational. In hindsight I’d say the midtones were too high, such that they look a bit icy in the first shot and the third shot doesn’t tie together as well as it should, but overall I’m not too unhappy with the results. :)
People photography on the other hand, IMHO is more concerned with conveying an individual’s unique personality, their character, possibly their mannerisms, but most of all give us a sense of who they are. I don’t see any major dividing lines between fashion and people photography as both can happily co-exist together in peaceful harmony :) As an example, I think anyone who’s seen Patrick Demarchelier’s shots of Mischa Barton for Morgan is sure to agree.
