Shipping framed prints

    Hi guys,

I have been running a website for a few years now and sell my landscape prints from it. I generally sell prints only as I have always been concerned about the breakage of framed prints.

I recently got an order from someone who insisted on framed prints and I eventually agreed to post. I double wrapped in sheet polystyrene and taped (like crazy) the framed print to a laminate wood board (glass towards sheet). It seems faily robust but I was wondering if anybody had any better suggestions. Getting custom made boxes made would not be an option for me at this time.

    Andy,
I’ve posted some framed prints over the years…..I hate doing it as the 2ml glass is a nightmare. I’ve used lots of bubblewrap to cushion the frame/glass and use “Caution – Handle With Care – Fragile” tape all over the place.
Never had a breakage so far. Still I hate to post glass. I also use registered post and put a fairly high value on it. This usually makes them be more careful.

I started to ship through River. They handle the packaging and postage. It’s expensive but my US customer pay for it. Both side are happy.

The method I’ve used is to put foam blocks on each corner and then use cardboard sheets above and below the picture. The foam blocks act as spacers so that nothing is in contact with the glass. Tape it all up and then use bubble wrap (big bubbles are better than small ones) and brown paper.

I’m not sure what the foam is made from, but a lot of electrical goods come with it – it’s sort of springy and fairy rigid, easy to cut and it’s not expanded polystyrene, which peppers your floor with little sticky balls. If you do have to use expanded polystyrene then put the picture in a sealed plastic bag first because the static in the little balls makes them difficult to remove from any surface.

It’s a pain to do it, but it’s worked for me. Unfortunately the only test you can do is drop the wrapped picture to see if it breaks – don’t bother… the postman will usually do this for you!

    Hi,

Question for Roberto: where can I find info on River shipping company? Googling them doesn’t seem to yield results.

    Thanks
