£100- £150 for a Canon zoom – what would you get?

    Hi all,

I am looking to get a zoom for my new 400d – something that will allow candid shots. I like the look of the Sigma 28-200 DC OS, but I can’t afford the £250 price tag…

…. for £155 I can get the Canon 55-250 IS, but after the spend on the camera and nifty fifty I will get divorced if I go for a £150 spend  .
… so to keep me going I was considering a used Sigma 70-300 APO – these sometimes appear for sub £80 and seem to be good.

what else should I be looking out for on the used market sub £100? Any other Sigmas or Tamrons?

    Thanks,

    Kieran.

    Silence :?:
Mods – is this is the right place? If not, can you move it?

    Thanks.

Just moved it for you Kieran (Welcome to PI by the way!).

First I’m a Nikon user. But to help with a response, I’d say that it depends on what sort of candids.
You could take candids with your 50mm. The 70-300 might be a bit long, but as I say depends on what you’re looking for.

I have the Sigma 70-300 APOII – red stripe (previous version, Nikon mount) and its good quality for little money.
So if you want some reach then you won’t go far wrong with it.

But do be careful with the version you get (assuming you will of course). There was a version before APOII and its poor.
There is also a version later than my APOII, its likely to be of good quality. In short make sure you don’t get the much older
version and avoid ones which have a Gold stripe around the top of the lens.

I got this one on Pixmania for my 450D for €171. No IS/OS but I don’t really find it to be an issue TBH.

    Here’s some reviews of it:

Thanks for the responses (and the thread move).

From this and other posts I have read I am hoping to get the Sigma 70-300 APO (waiting on a response from someone on the for sale forum). Failing that I might read a bit more on the Sigma 55-200. For £134 delivered it is not bad, but considerng that I can get the Canon 55-250 IS for £21 more I think that unless I got a used deal I would get the Canon IS.

Hard decisions when you have no budget…. :(

Think it all depends what type of candid shots you are chasing Kieran, I have the Sigma 70-300 APO, and certainly for the price you could have very few complaints.

It’s good for longer candid’s obviously…but I rarely use it for city stuff, which usually requires getting in a little closer a lot of the times. The 70mm is just a little long. My favourite lens around town is the 18-135mm. That gives you a relatively nice zoom and a good wideangle as well for those tighter moment.

Hope that is of some help and hasn’t confused the issue more…

It all helps – thanks for the advice.

I borrowed a mates old 70-300 Canon and got some good shots with it…sort of, butI loved the extra reach it gave me over the kit lens. So as luck would have it I manged to bag a used Sigma 70-300 APO tonight on AVF for a very reasonable £75 (I hope  ).

I think that eventually I willl want to change to a walkabout with a wider range (the 18-135 sounds great). but for now I will use the Sigma 70-300 and the nifty fifty to keep me learning…. this is a great hobby, loving it!!!
