:) hi.. what does everyone think of the 18-200mm nikon vr lens i,m thinkingof investing in one
or are there any suggestions for a different lens.MartinParticipantHaven’t used it myself but seems to get great write ups. Was very hard to get them when they first came out. Supposed to be a great all purpose walk around lens.
As for “suggestions for a different lens” really depends what your interests are eg landscape, wildlife ….

easParticipantI had one and sold it. I found image quality to be good, but it just wasn’t suited to what I shoot. (people in various lighting situations)
there are some reviews here

I recommend this to all my Nikon students as their walkaround lens,
Dave
quilmoreMemberI have it and I love it
that lens is all the time in the camera and only out to give way to the nifty fifty or to the 80-200 2.8 for when I need more light or less DOF
great lens
balance is perfect with a D200 (or superior, with or without grip)
I’ve seen it on a D40 and it was a bit disproportionateVR does work
it takes 72mm filters
AF is really quick and spot on all the time, it will never huntit has come down on price in USA, I haven’t check over here

By this do you just mean that it looks odd, but does it work ok with the D40 though, as in, is it an AF-S as i know the D40 requires this for the auto focus, i have a D40 and was gonna get this lense. If it isnt compatible i will hold off as i wil be upgrading to a better nikon sooner rather than later.
quilmoreMemberit’s fully compatible, AF and VR work very well on a D40
and they make a great camera
it’s just about size and handling
I’m a D200 with grip user, when I lend my lens to a friend with the D40 it seems like the lens is bigger than the camerait’s only suggestive and you shouldn’t pay much attention at what I felt the D40 with the 18-200
you should try it for yourselfmake yourself a favour, buy one, it’s a great lens
and the D40 is a great camera, you’ll take great pictures with themossie13ParticipantPaul
