40D for sure. Technology has moved so far since the original 1D. Image quality will be noticeably higher. Unless, as Steve noted, you need the better focusing system. If you do, then save a few more quid for a 1D Mk II. They can be got around £800 now.
Many people dont find themselves printing nowadays I find, and for web, email and 8×10’s (I’ve printed NEF’s up to 20×30 with Genuine Fractals) 4mp is plenty.
