1st wedding soon – Can anyone do a crash course with me!

Maggie, if you are planning on using Photoshop I would recommend just RAW. You should definitely be post processing to get the best out of the files.
RAW files from a 5D II with those lenses will give a lot of leeway in terms of manipulation after.
To be honest I think you should try to meet up with someone to go over some camera settings in person, such as exposure compensation, understanding histograms etc. And you need to be able to react instantly if your exposures, shutter speeds etc. aren’t right.
Maybe post a link to those pics you’re taking tomorrow and we can give you a few more pointers. :)
mervifwdcParticipantHi,
I dont want to scare you, but may of the questions are leading me to think you need to basic help, you’ll be using a new camera and lens (not that big of a deal, but..), and your still unsure about where to put people facing (sun, not sun, shade…), and have never used raw processing on files. you’r unsure of using a flash, and want to learn it in case you need it.
I dont know if it was mentioned above but:

Call Dave, explain the story to him and do this course. Even pay him to do a 1 on 1 crash course if the 19th does not suit you. it will be the safest/wisest money you have spent. There is no point in having the gear you have (and it’s nice gear! – good choices!) if you cannot get the best out them, or worse, cannot handle certain tricky situations.
I did this 1/2 with dave before I did any weddings, i’ve only done a dozen or so, but I found his course to be good. I dont work for him, I just know this was a wise way to spend half a day.
this weekend, take shots of your family pretending they are at a wedding. make one wear a white shirt, and another to wear black. Facign the sun, sun at their backs, in the shade with you in the sun etc – try all sorts of stuff. Work on getting the exposures on the faces accurate – and dont blow out the details in the wedding dress (the person wearing white……). the rest is less important. then post them up here, there are loads of folks that can help.
shoot some of them with flash, some without. take notes about which shot was done which way. that’s the best way to learn – reading about how loads of other folks do it is good, but you need to start practicing – and hard.
Only after seeing your images where your consiously giving it your best in a similar situation to a wedding will folks be able to “tune” their advice to help you out.
Hope I’m not bring too much of a killjoy, and I’m only saying this to help!
Merv.maggieParticipantCheers Merv. Met with Dave last saturday and he went through everything. I’m ok now thanks to that and to all your posts. Hopefully all will go well on the day. I’ve been practising like mad since and pics all turning out ok.
maggieParticipantJust to update and thank you for all your help. The wedding was yesterday and went really well. Really happy with 99% of the shots. I do need to brighten (slightly) a few so will post those when I get to them . I have come a long way in a month!! Thanks again to all who replied.
