Here are a couple of portraits for comment & critique, they arent standard ones in that you cant see the models face or eyes and this is intentional

They were an attempt to make an interesting & appealing image

Nice shots Gerard – you must be pleased with them :)

In the second shot the model’s forhead is a touch overexposed. In Dublin studios, with the limited space, even a small movement of the model towards the light can have a dramatic effect on the exposure. Forheads and noses (and bald heads on people like me) are prone to hotspots, so just be careful of them. Also, the muddy black background detracts from the shot a little. It would have been much better if you had mave made sure that your main and fill lights didnt spill onto the black paper background (again due to the size of the studio probably).

But original shots, nice colour, nice composition.. well done.

Cheers for the comment – something to think about alright.

I have little to no experience in studio shoots, just once really and although I enooyed it alot, i have to give credit to the model on the day for knowing what she was doing .. because i didn’t

Anyway … I do like the colours and tones that you captured in her hair, and the slight soft/ glowing tones of the shot (especially the first) …. BUT ;) I think if you were deliberately avoiding the face/ eyes style protrait perhap seeing a bit more body movement might help … or maybe if you were taking the shot further back… I don’t think it quite works for me and I think its the perspective thats the problem.. Does that make sense  ?

Thanks for commenting. I actually tried framing them differently on the day, closer frame than these 2 as well as some almost full length ones and it was the tighter framed ones that seemed better to me.

I have another one without the jacket where I post processed it a bit different – made it a bit sepia /duotone instead of the colours on this one and its framed shoulder to forehead instead – this one looks like its completely in motion. I think it could work as a full length one but the model was only swirling her hair not the rest of her – so the full length one looks a bit odd !

    newbie comment coming up.

Like the dark but not black background, gives the shot some atmosphere; pure black would kill it.
Agree with Ciaran, the burnouts on the forehead and chest are just too contrasty.
Is there a hint of soft focus going on, or is it just the motion blur?

Think it woulda been a more striking shot if she wasn’t wearing the jacket, red outtah muted dark tones is very striking.
It’s definitely got potential as an idea: thought; try doing two exposures, one with the model still, but underexposed by about a stop; the second, same pose but with more motion and a longer exposure…mibbe 2 secs, correctly exposed. You can either mash the transparancies together physically in a slide mount and print that way, or use Potatoshop and its layers to achieve similar results.

I dont agree with the two lads, i really like the burnouts on the head and chest. I think it s a great abstract portrait and its a good original idea.

    I say well done.
